by Rex Lardner (Author)
One of Sports Illustrated's Top 100 Sports Books of All Time
For less expense than a lost bet on the links, you can learn how to get "out of the bunker and into the trees." Rex Lardner, a unique stylist who hit his best shots when in a towering rage, reveals the secrets every golfer needs to know, including how to loft a ball out of your own trouser cuff; how to properly grip the 2-wood when smashing it against a tree; and how to hit special "trick" shots--the fade, the slice, the yip--without a club if necessary.
Out of the Bunker and into the Trees is essential reading for those looking to correct typical golfing faults. If you are an inconsistent putter, Lardner demonstrates how you never need to take more than six putts to hole out on any green. Too much reliance on advice from strangers? Lardner presents an object lesson with his traumatic experiences teaching pros.
Originally published in 1960, Out of the Bunker and into the Trees is so funny that various chapters have been widely reprinted in sports magazines. Readers today continue to enjoy this delightful parody of golf and golfers by a humorist who claimed to have discovered the reason people play golf: "to destroy themselves."
Author Biography
Rex Lardner (1918-98) is the author of fifteen books, including The Lardner Report, Downhill Lies and Other Falsehoods, and Ali. He was also a journalist and the chief writer for Ernie Kovacs on radio and television shows. Burt Owen was a photographer for publications such as Living for Young Homemakers and Sports Illustrated.

"No one can completely cover the game of golf like Bill Pennington and no book can comprehensively tell the story of the sport with the same wit, wisdom and knowledge like On Par. "--Jim Nantz, CBS Sports
Bill Pennington, the voice of the everyday golfer, has traveled the globe in search of golf's essentials--those basic principles, those ultimate truths (and, who are we kidding, any trick or quick fix he can pick up along the way) that will improve anyone's game. He has consulted elite golf instructors as well as countless caddies, groundskeepers, parking lot attendants, and bartenders. He has played rounds with Tiger Woods, Annika Sorenstam, and Justin Timberlake. He has spoken with psychiatrists, economists, and Zen masters. On a particularly bad outing, he even discoursed on the fickleness of golf with a wise raccoon. In On Par, Pennington distills this wisdom in an insightful guide to the game. From equipment to the language of golf, from camaraderie to the short-game/long-game debate, Pennington informs and entertains readers as he gets to the essence of the game, including that Holy Grail, the hole in one. Part instruction, part therapy, and shot through with Pennington's trademark wit and humor, this is a book for everyone who has felt the game's distinct pull--and slice. "A phenomenal guide . . . As all golfers know, the sport is about more than being able to hit a good shot and this book takes you through the journey, arming you with everything you need to know."--Annika Sorenstam "If you like golf, you'll like [this book] . . . Like no other sport, golf obsesses those poor souls who hope to master its subtleties and abundant complexities. One shot is hit like a dream, the next a nightmare. As a result, the game's disciples have embraced any and all techniques endorsed by pros and hackers, poets and philosophers (these days a good walk is often spoiled by tripping over a sandtrap's worth of Zen meditations and mystical tomes). But while so many have journeyed through golf's metaphysics, no one has presented a readable, compelling look at the science of the game -- until now.
In Newton on the Tee, accomplished science writer John Zumerchik examines, explores, and explains to us the endless details that make golf such a tantalizing pursuit. Written in language accessible to even the most scientifically disinclined, Zumerchik's book delves into areas of supreme importance to every golfer, including:- The Physics of the Sweet Swing: The universal principles shared by all those rhythmic and well-timed swings you see on TV but not in the mirror
- Mind Over Muscle: How the brain affects and controls the movements of the body (and why confidence is the golfer's most indispensable tool)
- Getting the Ball from Here to There: Decoding the vagaries of launch angles, spin, lift, and gravity that make the difference between walking happily down the fairway and tramping into the bunkers
- Probability and Statistics: Understanding the mathematics of golf, and a by-the-numbers appraisal of golf's greatest legends
With a firm grasp of both his subject and his 7-iron, Zumerchik takes the reader through all these topics and more, in an entertaining and enlightening work that will give every golfer something to chew on besides his or her nails, and make clear and comprehensible the hundred-and-thirty-five things you shouldn't think about during your backswing.
Author Biography

This fascinating book of Scottish field sports was first published in London 1889 and is now extremely scarce in the first edition. We are now republishing it from the original text and illustration. The author, although an expert and experienced shooting man and salmon angler, did not write this book with any intention of teaching his readers "How to Sport.". Rather, its 406 pages are devoted to a comprehensive chronicle of the facts and figures, sporting records and natural history relating to the field sports of that period. Twenty four detailed chapters include: - Scotland's Most Famous Out of Door Sports. - Scotland's Deer and Grouse Grounds. - Deer. Natural History and Stalking. - Hare Coursing. - Rabbits for Sport and Food. - The Grouse Family. - Natural Economy of a Grouse Moor. - Pheasants and Partridges. - Other Birds of Sport. - Poaching. - Gamekeepers. - Supply and Value of Game. - Game in Larder, Kitchen, and Dining Room. - Salmonia. Natural History and Fishing. - Troutiana. - Trout and Sport in the Borders. - Vermin of the Moors and Manors. - The Fox and Foxhunting. - Golf. - Curling. - Patrons and Parasites of Sport. Etc. This unusual and eminently readable book can be thoroughly recommended for inclusion in the library of all true country sportsmen. Many of the earliest sporting books, particularly those dating back to the 1800s, are now extremely scarce and very expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

In 1966, Carl Lohren made a breakthrough, and One Move to Better Golf explains it all. Highly regarded as an instructor and player in the New York Metropolitan PGA Section, Lohren formed his ideal golf swing after years of studying master golfer Ben Hogan. His eyes were opened at the 1964 Carling Open when he watched Hogan select an 8-iron and take a short swing on a 150 yard shot. To Lohren's surprise, Hogan's ball exploded off the clubface and wound up ten feet from the pin! This inspired Lohren to start his swing by turning his left shoulder as Hogan had. Immediately upon doing so, Carl's ball flight took on a different look: it had a piercing trajectory, with plenty of carry and roll. Carl continued to refine his method, so that in 1968, he won the NY State PGA Championship in a playoff over former Ryder Cup player Bill Collins.
In One Move to Better Golf, Lohren explains a simple method of starting the golf swing with one move that incorporates the fundamentals. In doing so, he gives you a framework of confidence for your swing. He also provides students with a complete methodology of the physical and mental preparation necessary for effective shotmaking.
Whether you are a low or high handicapper, One Move to Better Golf will give you a clear understanding of the total golf swing.
Carl Lohren has become best known for his innovative methods of golf instruction over his 50-year career of professional competition and teaching. Lohren worked as a PGA club professional, improving upon his game and studying the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour. After his mastery of the one move, Carl continued to excel as a tournament player, winning more professional tournaments, qualifying for the Champions Tour, in addition to competing in 11 major championships, 15 PGA Tour events, and numerous international tours. The Immortal of Golf was born in humble circumstances in a weavers cottage. His father, John Morris (1777-1846), was a weaver and letter carrier as the family resided on North Street in the ancient city of St. Andrews. Tom, at the age of fifteen, was apprenticed to the renowned Allan Robertson, champion golfer, unbeaten in his lifetime, and continued his employment as a journeyman. Since being bred in the home of golf and also instructed in the ancient game it is not surprising that Morris began to acquire skillfulness in the sport and began earning distinction on the links. In one of the first public appearances of the young professional he was a partner with Robertson, and played in a match for 400 pounds against William and James Dunn, known as the Dunn Brothers of Musselburgh and Morris and Robertson succeeded on the last day of the match, after being four down with eighteen to play, in winning the match. Before Tiger Woods--and before Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Ben Hogan, and even Bobby Jones, there was the great Canadian George S. Lyon.
This first account of Canada's little-known golf legend, Olympic Lyon traces his incredible journey from small-town Ontario to the final match of the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis.
At age thirty-seven, the fire insurance salesman and natural athlete from Toronto picked up a golf club for the first time. Just a few years later, he faced the world's best golfers--men half his age--in a grueling week of competition for the ultimate prize: the first Olympic gold medal for golf and a magnificent Championship Trophy.
A meticulously researched and wildly entertaining work of historical fiction, Olympic Lyon chronicles Lyon's remarkable career and the sudden rise in popularity of golf in North America. It weaves in such momentous events as the War of 1812, the Louis Riel Rebellion, the St. Louis World's Fair, and the Great Fire of Toronto. Above all else, it restores the memory of Canada's champion and ensures that his name will be forever bound to the great game of golf.

Love That Golf - It CAN Be Better Than You Think By DonHerold Feeling that most golf books are written by top-flight professionals who are miles removed from the problems of the ordinary deskbound, musclebound amateur, Don Herold believed there was room for one golf book written sympathetically by a learner for fellow learners. He believes every golf club should have a consulting psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. His book doesn't pretend to profundity along these lines, but he is certain that it will give comfort and consolation to all fair-to-mediocre golfers in their darker hours, largely by improving their mental attitude. The pros tell us how to hit a golf ball 250 yards. After all, that's not what we want to know. What we want to know is how to hit a golf ball. As one who has had more fun out of golf, than anything else in life, the author felt an urge to write a book to help all golfers get more fun and less distress out of the game. Don Herold says "Many golfers lead lives of quiet desperation. That is what I want to remedy, in this book." Contents Include: - "That Happy Adventure Golf" - You Can't Mix Golf With Hate, Or Haste - You Can't Score if You Can't Putt - Getting Those Approach Shots up for One Putt, I Hope - Don't Let The Long Shots Panic You - You've Gotta Take Aim - Let Golf Play You - "I'm Too Old to Learn, I'll Never Play Any Better" - Don't Be So Damned Dull - Good Golf is Shaken Only Out of a Practice Bag - Traps and Other Troubles - Along About Here

When the European sport of golf found its way to Long Island and took root in the Hamptons at Shinnecock Hills in 1891, its journey across the Atlantic served as the opening drive of a recreational era that now spans three centuries. Home to more than 130 golf courses, the area boasts prestigious American clubs overlooking picturesque Atlantic bays and inlets, along with public layouts climbing and descending the region's sloping terrain. Long Island is home to the most popular municipal golf facility in the country, the centerpiece of which is Bethpage Black, "the People's Country Club." Celebrated architects like A.W. Tillinghast, Devereux Emmet, Seth Raynor, and C.B. Macdonald built many of Long Island's famous courses, which have challenged the brightest of golf's stars. International tournaments and star-studded exhibitions have all been decided on Long Island turf, helping it grow into one of the world's most prominent golf settings.

How far do you want to hit the ball? If you're like everybody else, your answer is "just a little farther." Then "More Golf Swing Speed" is the Quick Guide for you. It focuses on the downswing-how you load the shaft at the top of your backswing and unload it at impact. It helps you understand both how to make the correct moves and how to avoid the incorrect ones: ** "Hold" or even increase your wrist cock during the downswing ** Avoid casting from the top ** Develop maximum clubhead speed as you near impact ** Learn how Hogan's supinated wrist position works ** Create a downward strike on the ball that prevents flipping ** And more There are no secret tricks to creating clubhead speed, and you don't need expensive training aids to create solid strikes on the ball. All you need is a clear understanding of what your club does during your downswing and how you can cooperate with it to get the most clubhead speed possible. All you need is "More Golf Swing Speed."

This book is meant to be unlike any other golf instruction book out on the market today! Mind Game is written from the unique point of view of a golf professional who has not only spent fifty-two years playing at all levels of the sport, from the P.G.A. Tour to the Philadelphia P.G.A. Section, but who has also taught the game for thirty-nine years to over twenty-five thousand individual golfers and at over five hundred clinics and camps. Some well-known teachers have taught the game of golf, but they themselves have never competed on a high level. Some players have played the tour but have never really been teachers. This book has been written from both perspectives. It presents educational information that will help golfers at all levels to maximize their opportunity to become better players. Most importantly, a teacher has to consider each student as an individual. It all begins with and depends on the identity of the student. How can they be helped to identify who they are as a golfer? For this reason, Mind Game will neither describe the so-called perfect positions in the golf swing nor compare your swing to that of Ernie Els, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth or Fred Couples. Understanding how to improve the mechanics of the swing is only a small part or percentage of how to improve a player's game. On the other hand, what it does present is a multitude of unique insights and secrets into how to play better golf, the single-most mentally-challenging sport in the world. The goal is to get inside the player's brain and share many aspects and situations that will allow them to manage themselves and make correct decisions both on and off the golf course. How do you handle nerves away from the golf course? Have you ever spent time at home or in your hotel room with a two-shot lead in either your club championship or the state amateur and wondered how to approach the situation? Do you utilize visualization and a pre-shot routine before each and every shot? Are you aware of ball flight laws? What foods and drinks should you eat or stay away from before and after playing? What should I consider before, during and after taking a lesson? Is there a difference between warmup and practice? How can a player prepare properly for a tournament? What does it mean to be in the zone and can I get there? Why should I be concerned with ball flight laws? What can I learn from brain research? Are there benefits in knowing the rules of the game? In terms of club fitting, what are the benefits of having the correct clubs in your hands? Do they match your individual needs concerning factors such as age, physical condition and flexibility? What about your driver and irons? Are your irons adjusted to the correct lies and lofts? Have you been matched with the proper shafts in all of your clubs? How different are you from the best players in the world in handling matters of insecurity, trust, happiness and confidence? The book is designed to be treated like a journal that can be read and reread many times. Important thoughts can either be highlighted or notes can be written down in the margins. In this light, think of it like a cookbook where the reader can go back numerous times to certain topic "recipes and ingredients" and remind themselves about newly learned secrets and insights.

"Dan Binchy's first two novels were delightful stories of small town Ireland and filled with a range of eccentric and hilarious characters. Both books received warm praise"---The Washington Post called The Neon Madonna "terrifically funny and a hilarious read." Booklist called The Last Resort "an endearing and entertaining combination of warmth and wit."
The tiny village of Trabane is tucked far away in the west of Ireland. The local golf course was designed more by nature than by man. On 'links' like this, golf is much more than just a game to those that play it. It is a battlefield where scores are settled and every man and woman is equal. To young Larry Lynch, nicknamed Loopy, golf opens up new horizons and the chance of a better life. Having only recently picked up the sport, he finds he has a natural skill and quickly becomes the town's leading amateur. Loopy's gifted athleticism earns him entry into the Atlantic Trophy---a prestigious competition at the famed course, Ballykissane. Helped only by an eccentric caddy and a gaggle of noisy supporters, he takes on some of the world's best amateur golfers in a titanic struggle that will warm the heart of readers everywhere. Little does he know that he is playing for a prize far, far greater than a silver trophy. Through it all, Binchy imbues the work with a wonderful feel of small town Ireland and, of course, the Irish spirit. "Echoes of Rocky in a sweet-natured tale of golf and small-town Ireland...Binchy's third...is a dead-solid hit with cousin Maeve ("I...love this book!"), which is not surprising since it's Binchyesque to the core."---Kirkus Reviews

Shipping Transparency
Orders ship within the United States. Cindi Book branded titles typically arrive in 5–9 business days, including 0–2 business days of handling and 5–7 business days in transit. Supplier-fulfilled items typically arrive in 8–11 business days, including 1–3 business days of handling and 7–8 business days in transit. Business days are Monday–Friday, excluding U.S. federal holidays. Delivery estimates are not guarantees. Cindi Book items have a flat $9.99 shipping charge. Shopify Collective items use shipping rates set by the supplier. Orders containing items from different fulfillment sources may include more than one shipping charge. Your full shipping total is shown at checkout before payment.
Returns & Refunds
Standard U.S. returns are accepted for eligible new, unopened items within 30 days of carrier delivery. Returns are by mail. Customers are responsible for standard return shipping, there is no restocking fee, and standard exchanges are not offered. Once an approved return is received and inspected, the refund is issued to the original payment method within 5 business days. Damaged, defective, or incorrect items are handled at no return-shipping cost to the customer.
Return eligibility is subject to the full policy. Opened, read, or unsealed books with broken seals or visible wear are final sale. Digital downloads, gift cards, and personalized products are non-refundable. Original shipping charges are not refunded for standard returns. Contact us within 7 days of delivery about damaged, defective, or incorrect items.
Payment & Checkout
Checkout is processed securely through Shopify. Shipping charges, applicable taxes, the final order total, and available payment methods are shown before you submit payment.
