by Bob Cullen (Author)
In the grand tradition of such classics as Golf in the Kingdom and Final Rounds comes a brilliant consideration of golf's inimitable and ever-growing popularity.
In 1908, Arnold Haultain wrote a delightful book with a deceptively simple title: The Mystery of Golf. It explores the love affair golfers have with their sport and has been a favorite ever since among connoisseurs and students of the game. Now, more than ninety years later, in a thematic continuation of Haultain's enduring treatise, Bob Cullen has crafted a literate and thoughtful book that chronicles his own quest to uncover the secrets to the spell that golf has cast on millions. Why golf? Beginning with that essential question, Cullen's fascinating explorations lead readers to a range of exotic and unexpected places of mind, spirit, and geography. Cleverly establishing entirely credible links between seemingly unrelated items -- from the breathtaking prowess of Tiger Woods to the Iranian government's near banning of golf to how a baby's smile is related to our love of golf -- Cullen weaves a rich and amusing tapestry, discussing suck unexpected subjects as Platonic philosophy and the nature of faith. As whimsical and picaresque as it is earnest and intensely personal, Why Golf? does for America's favorite weekend pastime what Peter Mayle did for the south of France and what George Will did for baseball.Author Biography

Despite the thirst for more information about women's golf, very little exists about its history outside of books about the legendary Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Hudson fills this void, offering a complete history of women in golf. He focuses on the fascinating development of women's golf, the creation of the women's tour, star athletes of the past, the astronomical rise of the present-day tour greats, and the future of the sport.
Golf may well have replaced baseball as America's pastime, and the sport enjoys incredible popularity across the globe. At the professional level, women's golf continues to escalate in popularity and media attention, particularly with the dominance of LPGA champion Annika Sorenstam and the interest surrounding teenage phenom Michelle Wie. Despite the thirst for more information about women's golf, very little exists about its history outside of books about the legendary Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Hudson's new book fills this void, focusing on the fascinating development of women's golf, the creation of the women's tour, star athletes of the past, and the astronomical rise of the present-day tour greats. In addition, Hudson examines women's golf in the context of the country's history of discrimination against women. Women's golf grew in popularity after the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, granting the right of suffrage. Unfortunately, gender discrimination remains a reality in the world of golf in certain locales of country club golf. Nonetheless, women's golf has never been more popular. For example, the Futures Tour, where girls and young women hone their skills on the way to the LPGA, has grown to more than 300 players from 27 countries, making it the largest international developmental tour in the world. And the 2006 LPGA Tour featured 34 events with prize money nearing $50 million, the highest ever in LPGA history. In 1890, Hudson writes, the Washington Post reported that some girls are anxious to learn golf, because they are really fond of sport and exercise; others, because it gives them a chance to show off a natty suit. Those girls are now acknowledged as women--and this book shows how very far they, and their sport, have come.Author Biography

In the year 2008, there were 8.6 million seniors playing golf. That's a whopping 33% of the 28 million people who played. Even with the growing boomer population, there has yet to be a book directed specifically to golfing seniors. This is not another book about swing mechanics. It's about the challenges people face as they age, especially if they don't continue to stay fit and healthy. And it addresses the common complaint of most senior golfers, "I can't hit the ball like I used to." We want to show you how you can improve your golf game and, as a bonus, live a longer, healthier life. In this groundbreaking work we will show you: . What creates the maximum power in a golf swing . Easy ways to increase and maintain strength, flexibility and balance . How to prevent injuries on and off the course . The one activity seniors do daily that hamrs the body most . What to do about existing body aches and pains . Which everyday foods can help your golf game . How you can enjoy your round of golf more and still have energy to enjoy the rest of the day with your family and friends . What is your golf personality as far as needs, style and stress points, how that affects your game and what you do to change it to lower your score . How to stay focused on the course . How to become aware and to change the negative thoughts and words about your game that make your handicap rise . Alternative healing methods used by pros to keep them fit and playing well . Why tour players add conscious breathing to their pre-shot routine The book is divided into seven chapters. Chapter I looks at what, besides arms, (the main source of power for seniors) creates power in the golf swing. Chapter II busts the conventional myths of aging and gives suggestions on how to stay youthful and vital. In Chapter III, Dr. Cherie Smith, D.C. describes the toll golf takes on your body and how you can alleviate aches, paind and strains associated with the game. Chapter IV offers great examples of strengthening movement you can do at home, without purchasing expensive fitness equipment. Chapter V talks about what Hippocrates said, "Eat as if your food is your medicine and your medicine is your food." Many seniors complain of loss of energy. Most of this comes from sedentary living and poor nutritional habits. No preaching, only information to use as you wish, with suggestions on how you may be able to cut down or elminate toxic prescription meds. Chapter VI describes how you can take control of your mental game. Dave Bisbee divides your golf personality into a G (Tiger), O, (Jim Furyk), L (Sergio Garcia), or F (Fred Couples), how these personality types will govern what you do on the course and how you can use the information to better your game - and your life. Chapter VII shows you how changing yor self-talk will not only improve your mood but improve your game. Discover how to stay in the present moment-one shot, one hole, one round at a time. Even if you choose to make only one or two small changes as described in this book, your life will improve drastically. You'll wake up in the morning excited to have another day to find the joy in life and after a great round of golf, be able to rest comfortably, without aches and pains. This is unlike any other golf book you've ever seen, sharing age-defying secrets to a better game and a healthier life for you and your family.

by Paul Staley (Author)
This is one of the most unusual and enjoyable golf books ever. It looks at the game from a variety of perspectives and answers, once and for all, the question many a golfer has asked him or herself, "Why do I play this game?" Among other things readers will see the game from the perspective of a visitor from another galaxy and will delve into heretofore neglected topics such as the relationship between religion and golf. Have you ever wondered what kind of golfer Moses would have been? Well, here's your chance. Have you ever really thought about the weird stuff we say out on the course? Well, here's a chance to read about just how strange we sound at times. Ever wonder why nobody has ever written a decent rap song about golf? Wonder no more because the lyrics are in this book. Read it, enjoy it and keep on playing.

It is considered by many the greatest season in golf history. In 1953 Ben Hogan provided a fitting exclamation point to his miraculous comeback from a near-fatal auto accident by becoming the first player to win golf's Triple Crown--the Masters, the U.S. Open, and the British Open--within a span of four months. It was closer than anyone had gotten to the modern-day Grand Slam of winning all four of golf's major tournaments. The Wee Ice Mon Cometh is the first book to detail Hogan's historic accomplishment. His 1953 season remains the world's greatest, and golfers seek to match his achievement every year. Bobby Jones in 1930 and Tiger Woods in 2000-2001 achieved comparable "slams," but the Hogan Slam stands alone due to the car crash four years before that left Hogan on shattered legs. He nonetheless won with record-setting performances on three of the most challenging courses in the world: Augusta National at the Masters, the U.S. Open at Oakmont, and the British Open at Carnoustie, Scotland. Ed Gruver weaves together interviews with members of Hogan's family, golf historians, playing partners, and business partners along with extensive research and eyewitness accounts of each tournament. Seventy years after his historic feat, the Hogan Slam still serves as a symbol for the many comebacks Hogan had to make throughout his life--his father's death by suicide when Ben was a boy, desperate days during the Great Depression, frustrating failures in tournaments early in his career, and the horrific accident that nearly killed him just as he was finally reaching the pinnacle of his profession.Author Biography
Ed Gruver is an award-winning sportswriter, reporter, and author. His books include Bringing the Monster to Its Knees: Ben Hogan, Oakland Hills, and the 1951 U.S. Open and Hell with the Lid Off: Inside the Fierce Rivalry between the 1970s Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers (Nebraska, 2019), among others. Trevor Williamson is the ambassador and keeper of the Carnoustie Way at the Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland.

Ben Hogan's legendary secret finally comes to light, literally making it a whole new ball game. This Whip grip (coupled with a change in the stance) is designed to give the rest of us the flexibility that has been missing from the Vardon technique since the days of the hickory shaft. Named after the first man-made object to break the sound barrier - the Bullwhip - it enhances the four variables to the physics formula for distance: more length, width, launch angle and clubhead speed. The senior golfer will find it a veritable fountain of youth; supplying extra distance, while massively reducing joint and muscle stress with an astounding additional THREE FEET OF TAKEAWAY ON THE DRAWBACK. For the pro, it prevents the small muscles in the hands from creating havoc under the pressure of the TV cameras. For the novice, it's a fast track method of improvement to the intermediate and advanced levels. And, for the non-golfer, it provides a method of hearing the glorious wail of the bagpipes for the very first time.
by Reeves Weedon (Author)
With back injuries in golf rising, there is clearly a need to investigate and resolve the problem via the biomechanics of the swing, rather than researching the technology of the clubs.
Having worked with scientists and doctors with a historical interest in innovation within sporting techniques, at Northern Michigan University, Michigan State University USA, and Sports Surgery Clinic (Dublin), we have discovered that compared to the modern swing our revolutionary Weedon's Way swing creates significant less torque between the thorax and pelvis without loss of performance.
In the modern swing, during the downswing the thorax accelerates whilst the pelvis decelerates. As a consequence the thorax and pelvis act in opposite directions; massive torque is inflicted on the lumbosacral spine mainly at L5/S1.In the Weedon's Way swing the thorax and pelvis travel at similar speeds reducing the aforementioned torque.
In essence we remove the axis tilt i.e. body's side bend on the downswing. In the course of my project I have collated and reviewed 17 years of scientific research papers relating to low back pain in golf. The solution common to all papers is to play/practice less whilst performing core strengthening exercises. There has never been an evidence-based alternative until now.

In May of 2013 he retired as a recruiter after 48 years to pursue his dream and number one item on his bucket list which was to do stand-up comedy before a live audience. He went to The Manhattan Comedy School in New York City to learn how to write jokes and perform them. After six weeks he completed school and on July 10th performed before 240 people at the Gotham Comedy Club in New York City. Without question he was a howling success. He came away realizing that he could write funny and perform funny. His family and friends kept asking him "So what's next?" The standard next step for comedian "wannabees" is to go to venues that have late evening "open mics" (microphones) to get performing experience (unpaid) and perhaps get discovered. That approach was not appealing because getting home after midnight would put a strain on his 48 year marriage. Bob also felt that becoming discovered was not likely to happen in the near future. He needed a faster pace. He decided to combine two of his passions - golf and humor- and wrote an original golf joke book using the name Bogey Bob Morris. The way he golfs it should have been Double Bogey Bob Morris. The book, Two Golf Balls Rolled Into A bar, was published in November, 2014. He has already started on the next book: Three Golf Balls Rolled Into A Bar! He graduated Middlebury College in 1956 majoring in Drama. His senior year drama project was producing and directing a comedy written by his father. In the summer of 1954 he was an apprentice at the Falmouth Playhouse in Massachusetts. The following summer he was in the summer acting group at Tufts College. His first job out of college was a Page Boy at the American Broadcasting Company in New York City. At night time he attend the NY School of Television where he learned more about what he saw at his job. In 1957 he had to spend 6 months on active duty with the NY National Guard. Upon returning he ended up working in a Greenwich Village theater. He then knocked around in various sales jobs and in March of 1964 he began a 48 year career as a recruiter. Later that year he got married to Susan, a California girl he met on Fire Island. Two years later he became a father to Melissa and the three moved to Rye NY. Two more children came along; Corrine in 1968 and Erica in 1970. They are all married with 2 kids each.

"When Golf was Fun" is a collection of tales from what is known as the "beer and barbecue circuit" of golf tournaments. These tournaments held in small town all across the state of Texas were not only the beginning of the careers of many great golfers but also produced some local legends. It was a time when golf was still a game, not a big business. This collection of 38 stories will entertain and amaze as you read first-hand accounts of some of the greatest exploits in the history of golf. You will read about local golf pros who are unknown outside of their local country club and you will also read about legends like Ben Crenshaw, Bruce Lietzke, Charles Coody, Miller Barber, Ben Hogan and others. Texas has a very rich golf history and much of it is captured in "When Golf was Fun." The late, great beer and barbecue circuit was a bygone era of Texas golf in which many Lone Star legends were born and raised but has since given way to the more civilized and organized golf industry we know today. Much like baseball's barnstorming days, the barbecue circuit was a series of unaffiliated events that brought an extremely high level of golf and excitement to tiny towns like Center and Athens; Quanah and Pampa-places you might otherwise never have known even existed.

By most standards, highly decorated Marine Colonel Jim Viejo would be considered a hero . . . but not in his own eyes. Personal tragedies have led him to conclude that he is a sinner and that God is rightfully punishing him for his transgressions.
As the former amateur golfer's life continues to unfold in a reasonably satisfying, somewhat predictable pattern, Joe is enjoying a happy marriage, working as a bank executive, and gearing up for retirement. But as he is about to discover, life has a way of throwing a curveball that changes everything.
Following a weekend spent watching the Masters golf tournament on television, Joe is working at his desk when he receives a message from God on his computer screen that tells him he has been chosen to deliver an inspirational message to the world that the seemingly impossible is possible. God tells Joe he is going to play in the Masters the following spring, and if his faith is strong enough, he will win. As Joe embarks on a spiritual journey to make a difference, he must learn to face his fears, have confidence in his abilities, and commit to his goals before he can succeed.
Walking with Herb is an inspirational story of an aging small-town banker's attempt to fulfill his higher purpose and, with God's help, prove that anything is possible.

Golf is bad swings, bad lies, bad weather, bad luck, and bad vibes. With more and more of golf's major champions preparing the same way as Olympians prepare in other sports, have you ever thought about how they actually work on the different aspects of their games? Or have you ever wondered how often you should practice different elements of your game? Similarly, have you ever wondered how many rounds major champions play between tournaments or how often they do preshot routines and what they think about? We will answer these questions and more in Train for Golf like an Olympian, so you can bring your A game to the first tee.

The twenty-five-day golf challenge at the end of the book provides a clear, long-term plan for peak performances. Plus, by applying the information in this book, you can develop the skill of making your own world-class training schedule.
This book is written utilizing a neutral format-neutral in technique and neutral in the training foundation. Neutral in technique means within the parameters of acceptability based on body types. Not too steep, not too flat-neutral. Not too long, not too short-neutral. Hands not too far forward, hands not too far back-neutral. And so on. Neutral in terms of the training foundation refers to the neutral midpoint between being overly technical and completely neglecting technique. This neutral foundation is based on a concept that regards personality types, swing types, and even body types; some need more work on technique and some need more work on distance control and feel. Plus some individuals' stats show they need more work on chipping, putting, or shot shaping, for instance. You will see that it's OK to vary, but it is important to be cautious of venturing too far from neutral training.

Sixty-three-year-old Joe Goodman thinks nothing much in his background distinguishes him from other guys his age. As the former amateur golfer's life continues to unfold in a reasonably satisfying, somewhat predictable pattern, Joe is enjoying a happy marriage, working as a bank executive, and gearing up for retirement. In the tradition of Seabiscuit, the riveting tale of two proud Scotsmen who beat all comers to become the heroes of a golden age--the dawn of professional golf. This essential golf history is now a major motion picture.
Bringing to life golf's founding father and son, Tommy's Honor is a stirring tribute to two legendary players and a vivid evocation of their colorful, rip-roaring times. The Morrises were towering figures in their day. Old Tom, born in 1821, began life as a nobody--he was the son of a weaver and a maid. But he was born in St. Andrews, Scotland, the cradle of golf, and the game was in his blood. He became the Champion Golfer of Scotland, a national hero who won tournaments (and huge bets) while his young son looked on. As "Keeper of the Green" at the town's ancient links, Tom deployed golf's first lawnmower and banished sheep from the fairways. Then Young Tommy's career took off. Handsome Tommy Morris, the Tiger Woods of the nineteenth century, was a more daring player than his father. Soon he surpassed Old Tom and dominated the game. But just as he reached his peak--with spectators flocking to see him play--Tommy's life took a tragic turn, leading to his death at the age of twenty-four. That shock is at the heart of Tommy's Honor. It left Tom to pick up the pieces--to honor his son by keeping Tommy's memory alive. Like the New York Times bestseller The Greatest Game Ever Played, Tommy's Honor is both fascinating history and a moving personal saga. Golfers will love it, but this book isn't only for golfers. It's for every son who has fought to escape a father's shadow and for every father who had guided a son toward manhood, then found it hard to let him go.Author Biography

Regardless of what society tells us, we were created to be totally dependent upon God physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The problem is we have put ourselves at the center of our lives and moved God out to the periphery as we try to satisfy all of our desires and ambitions. Only after life begins to "hit the fan" do we realize that "something" is missing. Unfortunately, as powerless human beings we continue to substitute the yearning in our hearts for spiritual and emotional needs with the acquisition of worldly possessions. However, the gnawing emptiness within not only remains, it turns us numb as we continue our search for more of life's gusto. Developing physical, emotional, and spiritual reflex responses is critical to a purpose filled life. To those who feel there is a more fulfilling way to live, let these tips be your playbook for both games. A former golf professional and golf coach, Bill Carlucci resides in Connecticut with his wife Maria of 30 years and two daughters Emily, 24 and Leah, 18. He has played a strong role with the Chamber of Commerce and the Southwest Area (CT) Commerce and Industry Association. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of both Stamford Hospice and the Stamford Youth Foundation. Bill received training in Christian Care-giving, Christ Care Small Group Leadership and as a Prison Fellowship volunteer. He is both a licensed and ordained member of the clergy Bill's ministry is to train people of all ages to manage life using the same mental focus and strategies used in golf. The ministry uses the unifying relationship building opportunities golf provides to break down denominational and racial walls currently standing in the way of unity among Christians.

If you've been struggling for a long time to lower your average score, you're either playing to your maximum physical ability or you don't fully understand the process of improvement. It's the latter. While most golfers believe they have a fairly good understanding of how the game is best played, they actually don't. And it's that lack of understanding, more than anything else, that inhibits their ability to improve.Today's golfer tends to believe that lower scores are achieved through purchasing better equipment, developing a better golf swing, and hitting the ball farther. But golf is not about high-tech equipment, ideal technique, or maximizing clubhead speed. Playing golf is about shot selection and shot creation. When playing golf, you're challenged to select and create the appropriate shot from varying circumstances. The quickest and easiest way to lower your average score is through developing your playing skills: shot selection, club selection, intention, setup position, and swing focus. Developing those skills stems directly from expanding your understanding of the game itself.Raising your potential as a golfer, through expanding your understanding of the game is what this book is about. As you gradually develop your playing skills, you'll notice your scores steadily improve, seemingly without any effort at all. Understanding Golf is truly a roadmap to lower scores.
