As Michael Lewis's bestseller Moneyball captured baseball at a technological turning point, this "highly entertaining, very smart book" (James Patterson) takes us inside golf's clash between its hallowed artistic tradition and its data-driven scientific future.
The world of golf is at a crossroads. As tech-nological innovations displace traditional philosophies, the golfing community has splintered into two deeply combative factions: the old-school teachers and players who believe in feel, artistry, and imagination, and the technically minded who want to remake the game around analytics, biomechanics, and performance data. In Golf's Holy War, "an obvious hole-in-one for golfers and their coaches" (Publishers Weekly, starred review), Brett Cyrgalis takes us inside the heated battle playing out from weekend hackers to PGA Tour pros. At the Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, California, golfers clad in full-body sensors target weaknesses in their biomechanics, while others take part in mental exercises designed to test their brain's psychological resilience. Meanwhile, coaches like Michael Hebron purge golfers of all technical infor-mation, tapping into the power of intuitive physical learning by playing rudimentary games. From historic St. Andrews to manicured Augusta, experimental com-munes in California to corporatized conferences in Orlando, William James to Ben Hogan to theoretical physics, the factions of the spiritual and technical push to redefine the boundaries of the game. And yet what does it say that Tiger Woods has orchestrated one of the greatest comebacks in sports history without the aid of a formal coach? But Golf's Holy War is more than just a book about golf--it's a story about modern life and how we are torn between resisting and embracing the changes brought about by the advancements of science and technology. It's also an exploration of golf coaching, sports psychology, historical legacies, the enriching bonds of education, and the many interpretations of reality.Author Biography

As a twenty-five-year plus Golf Professional, Chris Rowe tells stories through his experiences in the golf business. Golf Shops are places where people meet to tell stories not only about there round, but about life. When you go to a Starbucks you hear conversations all around you as you order you latte. When you get your haircut there are conversations going on in every chair. Taking time to listen and tell members and their guests different stories makes the golf shop a fun place to enjoy a few laughs and hang with the golf pros. Golf professionals get to hear it all from success to failures. I've given lessons to Billionaires and discounted lessons to college golfers trying to get better. The one thing we all have in common on the golf course is our deepest insecurities and flaws come out on the opening tee shot. Your wallet size doesn't matter when you put the tee in the ground and the golf professional announces your name. Golf is the greatest game because you can play it all your life. I've never seen an eighty year old man play football or baseball, but you see it every day on the links. Regardless of what you shoot at the end of the day the stories told after the round are what makes golf such a special game. Hope you enjoy my third book Golf Shops, Coffee Shops and Barbershops.

GOLF'S FORGOTTEN LEGENDS His father didn't want him playing golf, he was stricken with tuberculosis at 33, and he used a golf swing pros would never teach today. Yet he is renowned for being the world's first superstar golfer and greatest of his time. He was America's first golf hero, yet most American golfers know very little about him. At 19 he won the U.S. National Open and did it again the following year. However, he was ruthlessly maligned by Golf Magazine and the film "The Greatest Game Ever Played. He was arguably the most talented golfer in the history of the game, gaining prominence from the 1930s to 1950s. He was the first golfer in history to be blackballed by the PGA Tour for being too good. The greatest players came to him for instruction, including Ben Hogan. This golf pro threw away a U.S. Open Championship after she finished the tournament with the winning score. Read the story of her innocent mistake and what she could have done to reclaim her title.

As a bartender at exclusive country clubs in Atlanta and Savannah, Cass Cassidy has perfected his art of seducing "golf widows," the wives of high-roller golfers whose only real love is the mistress that is their sport. Over cocktails, these ladies chatter about their Louis Vuitton purses, Ferragamos, designer jewelry, and who among them has had "work done," all the banter masking their boredom. Cass has the looks and the bold confidence to make some of them forget their boredom - and their husbands.
In the ritzy circles of Atlanta's Pine Meadows Country Club, golf dominates the free time of many of its high rollers. Their "golf widows" are another story entirely.
Country club bartender Cass Cassidy has perfected his pickup techniques, no matter the age, shape, background or bra size of the "Golf Widows" he seeks.
Country club bartender Cass Cassidy realizes that true love and commitment aren't what he seeks in his "Golf Widows" affairs. For him, the conquest is nothing, the hunt all.
Cass enjoys role-playing with one of his "Golf Widows." Among them are a narcotics officer, a Bavarian shepherdess, a military interrogator, and a duchess who needs to be "embalmed" by a handsome undertaker, during their rendezvous at old motels and motor lodges, where she feeds quarters to vibrating beds.

New formula for effortlessly reaching any greens in regulation This book answers the single most important question in golf, which is how very long shots can be produced from seemingly effortless swings. Every golfer has experienced the phenomenon of hitting very long shots with seemingly easy and effortless swings on rare occasions. If it is known how these long and effortless shots can be repeated, golf will become much less difficult. Using slow motion picture sequences of champions, the exact key factors used by champions to create the most efficient swing for maximum distances are identified. By presenting for the first time simple distance generating formulas, the book shows how relatively little energy is needed to produce long shots. A new way is presented to precisely feel clubhead speed to increase it. These explain why champions can hit so far with balance and seemingly modest effort.

This book is designed to provide a blueprint, a road map, a plan to improve the pace of play in America. It does that by taking advantage of a wide range of scientific studies, data collection efforts and real-world experiences. It recognizes the complexity of the problem but also points out practical, simple-to-understand principles which, when applied, can make a big difference in how long it takes to play the game and increase the enjoyment of all golfers.
Author Biography
For over 30 years, Lucius J. Riccio, (a.k.a. "the Pope of Pace"), the founder of the Three/45 Golf Association, has been active in the administration and improvement of the game of golf. He has studied golf related issues using his statistical and analytical skills learned while earning three engineering degrees including a Ph.D. from Lehigh University. His early golf work included two research proposals and data analysis projects in the 1970's which, in part, lead to the development of the USGA Slope System. As an original member of the USGA's Handicap Research Team and as a member of its Handicap Procedure Committee, he has served that organization for over 30 years and is the recipient of the USGA's prestigious Isaac Grainger Award. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Metropolitan (NY) Golf Association and the MGA Foundation Board of Directors. He serves as a tournament rules official, having passed the USGA Rules Test after learning the Rules while riding New York's subways to and from work. He currently is a Professional Advisor for Golf Digest and a regular statistical contributor to that magazine. Over the last three decades, he has had many articles published in Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, Senior Golfer and The Met Golfer magazines. He also has written chapters in golf books, most notably a chapter in Johnny Miller's book Breaking 90. In his golfing life, his handicap index ranged in the high single digits until age has taken its toll. He credits his own statistical analyses as being instrumental in achieving the single-digit level. One of his greatest achievements in golf was winning the 1989 NYC Department of Sanitation Golf Tournament at Split Rock Golf Course against arguably the "strongest" field in golf. In 2013, Mr. Riccio was awarded the Inaugural ShotLink(R) Intellegence Prize by the PGA Tour for his paper "The Best Ball Striker on Tour", for which Columbia University received a $25,000 CDW Technology Grant. Mr. Riccio is on the faculty of Columbia University and teaches Business Analytics in its Business School, Engineering College and School of International and Public Affairs. He is the head of Columbia University's Consortium for Advanced Sports Analytics. In addition he is the Executive Vice President of Gedeon GRC, a New York based full service engineering firm, and is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of New York.

Join David Cook--world-renowned sports and performance psychologist, speaker, and bestselling author--as he teaches you that in golf and in life, it's time to get out of your own way and let your true self shine.
Based on thousands of athletes Cook has counseled and great mentors and teachers from whom he has learned, Golf's Sacred Journey is told through the lives of two characters--a rancher with a passion for teaching truth and a young golf professional at the end of his rope.
In Golf's Sacred Journey, Cook has compressed his decades of peak performance coaching into a story that will give you the tools you need to:
- Create a meaningful life, both on and off the golf course
- Be yourself amid the competition
- Find what you do well and perfect it
Come alongside Cook as he shows you that in life and on the golf course, we must be willing to coach and be coached--because doing only one will leave us feeling empty.
Praise for Golf's Sacred Journey:
"Dave teaches what I have learned from experience--that trophies do fade and tarnish, but that relationships with God and other people are where we find true meaning and significance in our lives. I know you'll love this book as much as I did. It will give you more enjoyment, confidence, and hope on your journey around the links, and for your journey to eternity."
--Scott Simpson, US Open Champion 1987
"If you read this book, I can assure you that you will finish it a different person than when you started. Find what you do well and perfect it. And most of all, do it with character. Dr. David Cook is a man of character. I have learned from him. You will too."

"Golf's Grand Design," prepared as a companion volume to the PBS documentary of the same name, expands upon the information presented in the television program. Co-authored by Bob Cupp, one of America's leading golf course designers, and Ron Whitten, Golf Digest's longtime senior editor on golf architecture, the book features rare sketches and diagrams of golf holes-some never before published-by 34 past and present golf architects, including Alister MacKenzie, Pete Dye, Bill Coore, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Doak, Gil Hanse, Doug Carrick, Steve Smyers and David McLay Kidd. In each chapter, based upon one of the drawings, Cupp and Whitten explore a different facet of the course depicted and present unique perspectives into the craft and art of golf course architecture. These sketches are the vehicles by which design becomes grass. They are not AutoCAD plottings used to clear permits (full of technicalities practically indecipherable by everyday folks), but intimate, immediate and sometimes idiosyncratic streams of consciousness that are handed to a bulldozer operator, along with words of instruction, which become reality; the very crux of golf design. These drawings seldom survive; ending up as grocery lists, note pads or even shelf paper. But if one comes back to the designer after the fact - after the hole has been played and proclaimed fun, the drawings become treasures. Written in a lively conversational format, "Golf's Grand Design" takes readers behind the scenes in the creation of many of America's finest courses, from the modest-budget Bully Pulpit in North Dakota to the mega-budget Shadow Creek in Nevada. The authors retell the discovery of the land that became the groundbreaking Sand Hills Golf Club in Nebraska and relate the extensive process required to complete the environmentally-sensitive Liberty National in New Jersey. They take readers behind the scenes with Jack Nicklaus at work and at play, analyze what made Donald Ross and A.W. Tillinghast such great architects, offer insights into the little-known design talents of PGA Tour Hall of Famers Tom Kite and Tom Watson and pass along revelations regarding such famous holes as "The Cape" and "The Redan." They conclude with a short discussion of the impact that technology has had on the world of golf. "Golf's Grand Design" is intended for all who enjoy golf or who, by virtue of these stories, might consider the game. It provides a fresh approach to understanding and appreciating good golf architecture. It will certainly be one of those books with a long shelf life because its content is not trendy but factual. It is the story of American golf and a living description of the creative process of a game that somehow worked its way into our very souls.

Because I appreciate you going out of your way to read this description here is an inside look at one of the Jordan Spieth ball control tips called "check it" from the bonus section. Check it "One of the best ways to control your ball is to hit it low, allowing it to gain after a few bounces. This technique can come in handy when you are dealing with a lot of green. Open the face of your sixty-degree wedge at address, and then set your ball about center in your stance to ensure that you catch it clean. On the return, hinge your wrists, and then try to maintain a bit of that hinge when coming down. Your hands should be slightly closer to the target during impact than your club head. A good trick to control the speed of the ball is to maintain the club head at close proximity to the ground as much as possible. This will enable the grooves to really grasp the ball and cause a backspin. Swinging up too soon will lead to either poor contact or a too high shot."

He shares his expertise via engaging twists of personal experiences mixed with an abundance of witty satire if not a very dry humor throughout. In this book, you will find the best-putting tips to help improve your golf game. No matter how far you hit your driver, how accurately you play iron shots, or how deftly you chip and pitch, golf is all about getting the ball in the hole. That means the shortest club in the bag - the putter, standard length 35" - plays an oversized role in determining your success. Statistics bear this out. Most golfers, including pros, use the putter for about 40% of all shots in a typical round. No other club comes close. If your average score is 90, you'll take about 36 putts per 18 holes. For pros, the figures are closer to 70 and 28. Is the stat misleading? A little, since it counts tap-ins that require practically no skill to make. But the fact remains - if you want to shave strokes from your score, the green is the first place to go. This book on the Putting Process was written by experts and, covers every aspect of this delicate art-slash-science.Fundamental putting tips are treated with exacting detail: developing a proper grip; aligning your body, eyes, and clubface; accelerating the putter through impact. We offer putting tips lessons on finer points, like reading the green's break and putting on bumpy surfaces, and discuss alternatives to conventional putting methods (e.g., using a "no-peek" stroke or cross-handed grip). Having the right equipment is critical, too, and you'll find advice on everything from standard and long putters to heavy clubheads to extra-thick grips. Of course, we also tackle the most common putting ailments, like deceleration, excessive wrist action, and the dreaded "yips." Finally, you'll find numerous drills designed to improve your stroke path, tempo, and more. Until you're holing every putt inside 10 feet, lagging every long one close and going months without a three-putt, there are always strokes to be gained on the greens.
