Timed perfectly for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Chuck Korr and Marvin Close's More Than Just a Game tells the timeless true story of how political prisoners under apartheid found hope and dignity through soccer.
In the hell that was Robben Island, inmates united courageously in an act of protest. Beginning in 1964, they requested the right to play soccer during their exercise periods. Denied repeatedly, they risked beatings and food deprivation by repeating their request for three years. Finally granted this right, the prisoners banded together to form a multi-tiered, pro-level league that ran for more than two decades and served as an impassioned symbol of resistance against apartheid. Former Robben Island inmate Nelson Mandela noted in the documentary FIFA: 90 Minutes for Mandela, "Soccer is more than just a game.... The energy, passion, and dedication this game created made us feel alive and triumphant despite the situation we found ourselves in."Author Biography
CHUCK KORR is professor emeritus of history at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and author of The End of Baseball As We Knew It and West Ham United. He has been published in the New York Times and has appeared on ESPN and CNN.
MARVIN CLOSE is a scriptwriter in the United Kingdom.by Deji Badiru (Author)

An inspiring book about resilience on and off the field for 8 to 12-year-old soccer fans
Eleven-year-old migrant Adi has settled nicely into her new life in Australia. She loves school and cherishes her friendships with other migrant kids. Playing soccer for the Seaside Rosellas on Sundays fuels her dream of becoming a women's soccer star one day. In Adi's mind, life could not be better. But now, this life has been turned upside down-again. Her mother has found a fancy private school that offers Adi a scholarship for Year Seven. Adi is devastated. She does not want to leave her friends behind.
From day one at the new school, she is relentlessly bullied because she looks different and speaks with an accent. Finding new friends seems to depend on meeting certain standards, which Adi finds hard to figure out, let alone meet. Her resentment grows, but so does her awareness that she has her own prejudices.
Will her desperate effort to join the school's athletics team and the nebulous girls' soccer team lead to acceptance and respect, or will she become a total outcast? This book tells the story of a migrant girl's journey and resilience in a world of cultural differences and expectations where prejudices flourish on all sides. Overcoming her challenges and her own prejudices helps her grow in strength and self-esteem.

What has happened to and in American youth soccer over the past fifty years? I will take you on a stroll down memory lane, sharing some of my fondest memories and others I would like to forget; but cannot.
Soccer in America has become "All about the money." Some have forgotten it really is, and needs to always be "All about the players" and to develop their lifelong love of and passion for the sport. Parents are willing to pay "whatever the market will bear" as the club and/or coaches charge ever increasing to astronomical fees with the hope to have their child will succeed in obtaining the holy grail of a college soccer scholarship and not let their child fall behind their peers. The problem is that many parents have no idea what is actually going on in America's youth soccer today, what they may soon face, or how to best navigate any of it.
The hashtag I use to describe this is #youcantmakethissoccerstuffup.
Money Grab $$-A Parents' Guide to American Youth Soccer is an insider's view of the actual soccer player developmental life cycle beginning with recreational FUN then to the drama, pain points, best practice actions and costs of competitive soccer. From just starting in the sport through your player's deveIopmental life cycle, we will share what it takes to enjoy, survive, and possibly even make a professional soccer team and then stay at that level. Having been involved for so long, I have heard this same parents' cry for help and understanding repeatedly, especially in the past few years. Parents who always want to do the best for their player but don't have a clue, or for those who thought they had the clue, only to find out otherwise, need guidance and insight into what is going on. It will be invaluable and settling to understand in advance the decisions parents may face so that they may make the correct ones given the information available or to obtain what is needed to make and intelligent, data-driven decision, what to look for in a coach and, when to run.
It will also identify many of the current and potential methods for a variety of folks to take parent's hard-earned money out of their wallets providing little to nothing in return, also known as "Money Grab."

A moving account of how a soccer team made up of diverse refugees inspired an entire community here in the United States.
Based on the adult bestseller, Outcasts United: An American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman's Quest to Make a Difference, this young people's edition is a complex and inspirational story about the Fugees, a youth soccer team made up of diverse refugees from around the world, and their formidable female coach, Luma Mufleh. Luma Mufleh, a young Jordanian woman educated in the United States and working as a coach for private youth soccer teams in Atlanta, was out for a drive one day and ended up in Clarkston, Georgia, where she was amazed and delighted to see young boys, black and brown and white, some barefoot, playing soccer on every flat surface they could find. Luma decided to quit her job, move to Clarkston, and start a soccer team that would soon defy the odds. Despite challenges to locate a practice field, minimal funding for uniforms and equipment, and zero fans on the sidelines, the Fugees practiced hard and demonstrated a team spirit that drew admiration from referees and competitors alike. Outcasts United explores how the community changed with the influx of refugees and how the dedication of Lumah Mufleh and the entire Fugees soccer team inspired an entire community. How do you fall in love with a game that ends in a draw 20% of the time? A game in which goals happen on only 10% of all shots and shots happen on only 11% of all possessions?
To truly love soccer, you need to love the moments between goals. Non-Goals illuminates these under-the-surface moments on a soccer field, unlocking the game by connecting on-field action to cultural phenomena that the soccer-curious will understand. Whether you're a fan or a non-fan, after reading Non-Goals you'll never look at soccer the same way again.

Argo meets The Bookseller of Kabul in this incredible memoir from the Afghan women's soccer pioneer turned activist and feminist icon who has helped save more than 350 female soccer players from the dangerous rule of the Taliban.
"Riveting, heart-wrenching and incredibly important . . . an inspirational story for girls and women everywhere." --MALALA YOUSAFZAI, Nobel Peace Prize laureate A 2025 GREAT GROUP READS SELECTION BY THE WOMEN'S NATIONAL BOOK ASSOCIATION A story of survival, sisterhood and the fight for feminism in the age of the Taliban. In August 2021, Kabul fell under the control of the Taliban, a militant political and fundamentalist religious faction. For Khalida Popal, it signaled the beginning of the most important battle of an already extraordinary young life--to get female soccer players out of a city where they faced imminent threat of execution simply for playing sports. Khalida first began playing soccer in a refugee camp in Pakistan after her parents fled Taliban rule. Returning to Afghanistan, she fell deeper in love with the freedom and comradeship soccer provides. As co-founder and first captain of the Afghan women's soccer team, Khalida began using sports to empower young women, and was subjected to intensifying death threats in return. Hounded out of her own country, she continued to support the Afghan women's team, founding the organization Girl Power and exposing widespread sexual abuse of players. From her new home in Denmark, she watched Kabul fall and immediately knew the risk to the players still there. Assembling a small but mighty network of international allies, she began evacuating women whose lives were at risk simply for loving the sport she had done so much to promote. Her teammates. Her sisters. My Beautiful Sisters is a gripping, important memoir, and a compulsively readable one--a harrowing yet ultimately heartening story of survival and sisterhood.Author Biography

All over the world, soccer is known as "the Beautiful Game" and is the most popular sport. But in the United States, professional soccer still has a hard time catching on. It has had some successes here. The American Soccer League of the 1920s, Pélé and other international stars in the North American Soccer League's glamorous 1970s, the indoor soccer phenomenon of the 1980s, and the U.S. women's win in the Women's World Cup of 1999 all hinted that the American public is ready to embrace pro soccer. In its short history, Major League Soccer (MLS) has survived and even started to thrive, drawing steady crowds and loyal fans. In Long-Range Goals, Beau Dure profiles teams and players, including D.C. United, the Los Angeles Galaxy, Landon Donovan, Freddy Adu, and Coach Bruce Arena, who are all vital to MLS. Some of the triumphs include an expansion of the league and its ownership group, the contribution of MLS players to a strong U.S. World Cup showing in 2002, and the construction of soccer stadiums nationwide. At the same time, MLS has occasionally stumbled, during costly legal battles with players and seeing two teams fold, but its investors have remained strong, figured out how to make money, and support the league. From the league's formation in 1993 to the David Beckham era, this book reveals all the action on and off the pitch: the politics, the lawsuits, the management of its teams, and the savvy business deals that helped MLS rebound. It also revels in the big personalities of its stars, the grace of its utility players, and the obstacles the league faces in meeting its long-range goals.

Having spent more than thirty-five years on the sidelines coaching youth players of all ages and having run many soccer camps over the years, I felt that we were not teaching the team game of soccer properly. Team practices consisted mostly of numerous and varied isolated drills. Never really seeing the progress that I thought a team should be making in their development, I felt that a different approach was needed in teaching teams the game of soccer. To achieve this end I have created a team-game concept for developing youth soccer teams. This program uses a curriculum approach to teaching. Repetition of each element as well as simplicity is the key to developing players to play on instinct. This book demonstrates this alternate method for developing our youth to play soccer with an understanding of the game. The simpler we keep our practices the more the player will learn, with repetition being the key. Therefore, "Less is more"! Filled with both the philosophy behind all aspects of youth soccer and a three year program guide of plays, this book is a hands on guide to teaching youth the game of soccer.

Lila wants to play soccer with the boys, and empowers all girls to go out and play sports. Set in Haiti, this story offers a glimpse into everyday life for Lila and her mom, and a universal message about how one girl can use her power and determination to change the way things are done. The original Haitian text is displayed next to the English so that this beautiful language and rich culture can be preserved and passed down from one generation to the next. Sure to delight families of the Haitian diaspora, this story will also expand the mind of any child who is curious about other cultures.
This story is written and illustrated by Haitian women living in the community. In March and June of 2017, NABU, with funding from USAID, hosted a series of Writers Workshops in Port-au-Prince with the purpose of creating original children's books in Haitian Creole. The Writers Workshops were created as part of our goal to address the need for children's books in mother tongue languages. NABU and our director in Haiti, Françoise Thybulle, recruited Haitian authors and illustrators to participate. These sessions were our first and we have since also had workshops in Rwanda to create original books in Kinyarwanda. The two sessions in Haiti each hosted 25 Haitian authors and illustrators and created a total of 259 titles. It is out of these workshops that an initial collection of 16 was borne. We intend to release two books every month from the colleciton, and all of the profits from the sale of this book will go to support local authors and illustrators and NABU reading programs in Haiti.
NABU is a New York-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with a mission to solve the imbalance in children's book creation and distribution, so all children can read and rise to their full potential.
NABU Publishing creates children's stories with a cultural point of view. Children who are exposed to multiple cultures and languages are more likely to become lifelong learners and compassionate global citizens. We believe that culturally-relevant stories that reflect who children see when they look in the mirror help to develop healthy self esteem and a sense of pride, and children who learn about cultures different from their own are much more likely to develop into adults who value the dignity of human life and making the world a better place for all. This series of NABU stories are bilingual, written in both Haitian Creole and English, making them ideal for exposing young children to new cultures or helping children of the diaspora connect to the culture of their families.

Soccer coaches across all levels of the game share a common and simple dilemma: how best to improve their players. One of the best ways to do this is through improved communication and how we individualize our messages to our players. It's fundamentally important for coaches to provide quality communication with clear detail and, as the FA's Future Game Philosophy makes clear, "Mastery of innovative coaching methods that utilize communication styles is the mark of a gifted coach, and will be an essential requirement for the game of the future."
Examples of good communications that develop game understanding and skill are seen with elite football coaches such as Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola. Their messages are directly linked to how they want their teams to play, hence the importance of having a coaching vocabulary that players can understand. Let's Talk Soccer introduces 'game-calls', game -specific communication designed to enhance decision making and skill among players. Through game-calls your team will become more organised, and your players will understand - as individuals - how to play within your playing philosophy.
Let's Talk Soccer is a practical resource on how to develop communication in game-realistic practices that will increase creativity and skill across all ages. This book is based on tried and tested methods, offering you a framework using 'keywords' directly linked to your playing style. The book will help you develop a clear coaching language such that, when used in training and in games, your players will instantly understand what you mean and can consolidate their learning.

Named to US Youth Soccer's Recommended Reading List in September, 2015, and updated with ALL-NEW GRAPHICS AND DIAGRAMS, "It Pays to Win on Offense" is a book for soccer coaches who are looking for the most effective way to engage all of their players all of the time in order to teach them attacking soccer concepts. The book provides an all-encompassing Game-based Soccer framework for instilling a relentless, attacking mindset in players. By combining educational theory and making everything a competition, coaches can maximize their practice time and teach that attacking concepts are not just limited to certain players or limited to specific positions on the field. Let's be honest, there are a lot of soccer coaching books out there. Why would you choose to read this one? For parents of soccer players, "It Pays to Win on Offense" gives you insight into what might motivate your own child at soccer practice. While this is really a coaches' book, you may find it interesting to learn about offensive principles of play and the guided discovery questions allow you to ask good questions about the defensive side of the game. For players, "It Pays to Win on Offense" allows you to see where your coach might be coming from when he or she is teaching you defensive concepts. Each coach will have their own style of delivery, but most if not all of the general concepts in this book will hold true. Also, if your learning style is more book-oriented, you will be able to gain deeper understanding of defense and defending on your own time, so you will be more comfortable in practices and games having already been exposed to the ideas. For inexperienced coaches, "It Pays to Win on Offense" provides you with a very detailed, easy-to-understand set of games that can be applied to ANY setting. This is primarily why the book is organized by the number of big goals you have available. ALL of the games and activities contained in this book have been field-tested and they work! Game-based Soccer gives you a framework for practices that will transfer to match days. Because GBS is, by definition, game-oriented, it allows you to observe your players more without feeling that you have to jump in and "be a coach" - this is the number one mistake I see inexperienced coaches make (spending too much time talking with the players standing around getting bored). For coaches who have some experience, "It Pays to Win on Offense" allows you to stay fresh and keep your players energized, especially true when you have been coaching the same group of players for an extended period of time. This framework may be useful, as it challenges some schools of soccer thought with which you may be more familiar. The package of activities, questions, and progressions can be used wholesale or picked apart, depending on your comfort/interest level. For experienced coaches, "It Pays to Win on Offense" provides you with some new perspectives and games with which to "tweak" your own coaching philosophy and practice implementation. Some experienced coaches have told me that they use some of the games here, as they hadn't come across them before. Others have said that they really like the guided discovery questions because it gives them a new approach to try with their players. Others still have told me that they started with one game in the book and then it morphed/evolved into a different one. This is what experienced coaches do; they take something new and apply it to their own setting to get what they need from their players. All in all, I think anyone who has an interest in soccer, specifically the offensive side of the game, can get something from this book. I hope you enjoy "It Pays to Win on Offense," and I welcome dialogue about Game-based Soccer.

Named to US Youth Soccer's Recommended Reading List in September, 2015 and recently updated to include ALL-NEW GRAPHICS AND DIAGRAMS, "It Pays to Win on Defense" is a book for soccer coaches who are looking for the most effective way to engage all of their players all of the time in order to teach them how to best keep the ball out of their own team's goal! The book provides an all-encompassing framework for instilling the skills and mindset necessary for highly effective defenders. By combining educational theory and making everything a competition, coaches can maximize their practice time and teach that defending concepts are not just limited to certain players (e.g. the centre backs or the defensive midfielders). As I tell my teams, when we don't have the ball, EVERYONE is a defender. Therefore, EVERY player on your team needs to know how to defend and defend well! Still need convincing? Why choose "this" soccer book over the hundreds that are already out there? In short, this book is different because it combines insights and proven activities from a soccer perspective with an educator's detailed explanations. Specifically: For parents of soccer players, "It Pays to Win on Defense" gives you insight into what might motivate your own child at soccer practice. While this is really a coaches' book, you may find it interesting to learn about defensive principles of play and the guided discovery questions allow you to ask good questions about the defensive side of the game. Kingdom of Football explores how and why Saudi Arabia burst onto the landscape of world football in 2023, and examines what the speed and scale of Saudi engagement--as investor, owner, sponsor, host and competitor--might mean for the Kingdom and for football.
Writing as both a football fan and a Gulf specialist, Kristian Coates Ulrichsen offers historical and comparative contexts for Saudi Arabia's startling emergence as a world football hub in the 2020s, exploring both previous Saudi investment in the game, in the 1970s, and national attempts elsewhere to kickstart the sport, as in the United States, Japan and China. Going beyond popular media labels such as 'sportswashing', this fascinating book examines what drives Saudi policymaking, connecting the move into football with domestic economic and social developments, as well as external and foreign policy considerations. It also examines how Riyadh's foray into world football both builds upon and yet differs from the approaches taken by other Gulf States, such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Finally, Coates Ulrichsen assesses the sustainability and durability of the Kingdom's engagement with the sport in the decade-long countdown to the 2034 FIFA World Cup, which Saudi Arabia is set to host.Author Biography

Once an approved return is received and inspected, the refund is issued to the original payment method within 5 business days. Damaged, defective, or incorrect items are handled at no return-shipping cost to the customer.
Return eligibility is subject to the full policy. Opened, read, or unsealed books with broken seals or visible wear are final sale. Digital downloads, gift cards, and personalized products are non-refundable. Original shipping charges are not refunded for standard returns. Contact us within 7 days of delivery about damaged, defective, or incorrect items.
