The 2006 World Cup final between Italy and France was a down-and-dirty game, marred by French superstar Zidane's head-butting of Italian defender Materazzi. But viewers were also exposed to the poetry, force, and excellence of the Italian game; as operatic as Verdi and as cunning as Machiavelli, it seemed to open a window into the Italian soul. John Foot's epic history shows what makes Italian soccer so unique. Mixing serious analysis and comic storytelling, Foot describes its humble origins in northern Italy in the 1890s to its present day incarnation where soccer is the national civic religion. A story that is reminiscent of Gangs of New York and A Clockwork Orange, Foot shows how the Italian game - like its political culture - has been overshadowed by big business, violence, conspiracy, and tragedy, how demagogues like Benito Mussolini and Silvio Berlusconi have used the game to further their own political ambitions. But Winning at All Costs also celebrates the sweet moments - the four World Cup victories, the success of Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, the role soccer played in the resistance to Nazism, and the great managers and players who show that Italian soccer is as irresistible as Italy itself.
Author Biography
John Foot teaches modern Italian history at University College London. He writes for the Guardian, the London Review of Books, and the TLS and is the author of books on Milan and modern Italian history.

"A tale about a man who lived the American dream, by doing things many said couldn't be done."-Alexi Lalas, former US national team player, Fox Sports broadcaster
You Can't Get There from Here is a story of resilience, reinvention, and one man's determination to turn bold dreams into reality.
Roger Faulkner grew up in wartime Britain as a promising tennis player, but his life took a new course when a career transfer brought him to Detroit. After years with Burroughs Corporation, he pursued his passion for soccer by cofounding the Detroit Express of the North American Soccer League with English soccer icon Jimmy Hill. Their partnership ended in turmoil, with Hill subsequently moving the team to Washington, DC, where it was to fold ignominiously in what the British press dubbed "Jimmy Hill's American disaster."
Undeterred, Faulkner later launched Detroit's bid to host matches for the 1994 World Cup. Against all odds, his daring plan to play on natural grass inside the Pontiac Silverdome stunned the world and made history. As chair of the bid and host committees, he helped deliver one of the tournament's most successful venues and later contributed to the World Cup's legacy through participation in the founding of Major League Soccer and the US Soccer Foundation.
Told with humor and candor, Faulkner's story brims with unforgettable encounters-from Henry Kissinger to Robin Williams-and celebrates the persistence required to achieve the seemingly impossible.

In recent times, it has become clear that many aspects of traditional youth football coaching and development need to change. In an ever-changing world, driven by progress in education, societal shifts, the internet and social media, and reduced contact time with actual footballs - coaches need to adapt too.
In "Youth Soccer Development", football coach Noel Dempsey examines where coaching has come from and where it is heading. Offering insights into how English football has developed, coaching methods, 'talent' in youngsters, and how a player's entire environment needs to be considered in coaching programmes - this book offers many touchpoints for coaches who want to advance their thinking and their coaching.
Leaving specific onfield drills and exercises to other books, "Youth Soccer Development" digs deep into 'nature versus nature', players' core beliefs, confidence, motivation, and much more. Advocating that to improve the player, you must improve the person, Dempsey puts forward a case for coaches to be realistic with their players, ensure that they work positively across all facets of their lives - especially education - and to instil a mindset that leads to players being the best person they can be.
By creating better people you are more likely to create better players.

"If you are a real soccer player--then this is the book for you to read . . . Inspiring and uplifting."--GoalNation
In 2015, the US Women's National Soccer Team won its first FIFA championship in sixteen years, culminating in an epic final game that electrified soccer fans around the world. It featured a gutsy, brilliant performance by team captain and midfielder Carli Lloyd, who made history that day, scoring a hat trick during the first sixteen minutes.?
But there was a time when Carli almost quit the sport. In 2003 she was struggling, her soccer career at a crossroads. Then she found a trusted trainer, James Galanis, who saw in Carli a player with raw talent, skill, and a great dedication to the game. Together they set to work, training day and night, fighting, grinding it out. Despite all the naysayers, the times she was benched, the moments when her self-confidence took a nosedive, she succeeded in becoming one of the best players in the world and bound for the Summer Games in 2021 at thirty-nine.

Pass - Trap - Move is a youth soccer coaching system developed over ten years of coaching and researching youth soccer and futsal. It's not rocket science just just common sense, focus on teaching the core soccer skills that make up most of a soccer game. For those with little soccer knowledge that may look like dribbling....it's not. It may look like shooting....it's not.
Ten years ago I started helping coach my oldest son in soccer mainly because his coach knew virtually nothing about the sport. He was a dad like me our difference was that I enjoyed the game and had some history playing.
There are thousands of such parents across the United States, that's who this book is for. It's also for coaches like me who constantly search for more and better drills and games, concepts and statistics, even psychology, that could help us do a better job.
Inside there are suggested practice schedules for u6-u14 and beyond. The focus of each practice are the core skills that every soccer player must develop to be great. By focusing on these skills players develop faster, teams play better and smiles abound!
Stop dribbling, start winning and start having fun!

Different Evolutionary Models - Past, Present, and Future - Certain to Collide at Women's World Cup 2023
With this new edition of his feted 2019 volume, Dr. Andrei Markovits - author of many books and academic papers on world fútbol, published in multiple languages - trains his canny, socio-historical eye on the contrasting cultural forces shaping women's soccer in 2023.
- A head start. Where North American women, starting in the 1970s, enjoyed newly rendered systems and cultural spaces left empty by traditionally male-centered team sports, their European sisters were forced to contest what has arguably been the most male-dominated space in European public life.
- Changing dynamics. These nuanced, divergent evolutions help explain the dominance of the 4-time World Cup champion United States. However, hard-won access to the European player-development apparatus, mainly at the club level, has tipped the balance of power.
- Crucial support. Markovits also identifies the one cohort vital to the sport's commercial success, on either side of the Atlantic: women themselves, who have rarely (if ever) supported any team game at the professional level in numbers that would allow women's soccer to compete equitably with team sports played exclusively and watched largely by men.
No book better explains this fascinating state of play or better preps the global soccer community for a World Cup sure to remake the sport's balance of power.

by Matthew Whitehouse (Author)
The game of soccer is constantly in flux; new ideas, philosophies and tactics mould the present and shape the future.
Since the turn of the century we have witnessed dramatic changes in the beautiful game: new types of player, new coaching methods, and tactical innovations have all enhanced and changed the sport of football. The technical, tactical, physical and psychological skills needs of the modern player - from the goalkeeper to centre forward - have all been enhanced. In a nutshell, the modern game is quicker as well as being technically and tactically more advanced than for previous generations. Excitingly, the future promises to be even faster, more technical, and more demanding of its players!
After witnessing Spanish football and Barcelona provide one of the great periods of global dominance - we are now entering a new era; one which is being led by German football, and notably Bayern Munich. Germany, now world champions at international level, along with the visionary coaching philosophy of Pep Guardiola at club level, are taking football into a new epoch, one which the Italian coach Arrigo Sacchi prophesised several years ago. One of Universality.
In this book, Matthew Whitehouse - acclaimed author of "The Way Forward: Solutions to England's Football Failings" - looks in-depth at the past decade of the game, taking the reader on a journey into football's evolution. Examining the key changes that have occurred since the turn of the century right up to the present, the book looks at the evolution of tactics, coaching, and position-specific play. They have led us to this moment: to the rise of universality.
Universality The Blueprint For Soccer's New Era is a voyage into football, as well as a lesson for coaches, players and fans who seek to know and anticipate where the game of the future is heading.

by Dan Woog (Author)
In over 30 years as a youth and high school soccer coach, Dan Woog has seen it all.
Crazy kids. Berserk parents. Amazing games. Funny, weird, fantastic, awful situations. And that's just one day. Soccer has been very, very good to Dan. He's taken teams to Europe, Brazil and Australia. He's been to Pele's house, coached in front of 77,000 people, helped raise $25,000 at a carwash, and acted in a soccer movie. He's met incredible young athletes, forged lifelong bonds, and had them tested by too many deaths. He's learned what makes teenagers tick. He's learned a lot about life. And he's learned even more about himself. After describing - with great hilarity, deep compassion, keen insight and a deft, lively touch - everything from coaching players who were "off in the corner juggling while God handed out common sense" to dealing with those who face incredible personal struggles and tragedies - Dan talks about his own life. The final chapter covers his own coming out as a gay man - a defining moment in his career. We Kick Balls: True Stories from the Youth Soccer Wars has been called "funny, warm, courageous and edifying." It ricochets from the World Cup to Dachau, from race and religion to 9/11. Because teenagers are involved, there's sex, alcohol and rock 'n' roll. Somehow, soccer connects them all. Dan often says, "There's more to life than soccer. And there's more to soccer than soccer." We Kick Balls is a book about kids, life, and everything that happens to all of us, on and off the field. It's a soccer book, sure, but it's much more. It's a book for anyone who has teenagers, or works with them. It's about society as much as it's about sports. And, given the current visibility of gay issues, it's an important voice in our national conversation. Dan Woog is uniquely positioned to tell these tales - and tell them winningly. A Westport, Conn.-based soccer coach, writer and educator, he's won state championships. He's been named a national Coach of the Year, and been inducted into Connecticut's Soccer Hall of Fame. A graduate of Brown University, Dan has written thousands of newspaper and magazine articles, been published in the New York Times and Sports Illustrated, and authored two books on the experiences of gay male athletes. His athletes are most impressed that he's appeared on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."by Chest Dugger (Author)

Pelé--legendary footballer and humanitarian--explores the sport's recent history and shares his most inspiring experiences, heartwarming stories, and hard-won wisdom.
"I know in my heart that soccer was good to me, and great to the world....I saw, time and again, how the sport improved countless millions of lives, both on and off the field. For me, at least, that's why soccer matters." The world's most popular sport goes by many names--soccer, football, the beautiful game--but fans have always agreed on one thing: The greatest player of all time was Pelé. Before Messi, before Ronaldo, before Beckham, Pelé had a stunning twenty-year career, where he was heralded as an international treasure. His accomplishments on the field proved to be pure magic: an unprecedented three World Cup championships and the all-time scoring record, with 1,283 goals. Since retiring, he has traveled the world as soccer's global ambassador, relentlessly promoting the positive ways soccer can transform young men and women, struggling communities, even entire nations. This is Pelé's legacy, his way of passing on everything he's learned and inspiring a new generation. In Why Soccer Matters, Pelé details his ambitious goals for the future of the sport and, by extension, the world.Author Biography
Pelé started his professional career at the age of sixteen for Santos Futebol Clube, a club he stayed with for nearly two decades. In 1958, he won his first World Cup for Brazil at age seventeen--the youngest winner ever. He went on to win another two World Cups in 1962 and 1970, making him the only player in the world today with three Jules Rimet trophies. He is the all-time leading scorer in the history of the sport (1,283 goals in 1,366 matches). Named one of the "Top 20 Most Important People of the 20th Century" (Time) and "Football Player of the Century" (FIFA), Pelé was a spokesperson, philantropist, and passionate ambassador to the sport and to society as a whole. He died in 2022.

An "excellent" (New Yorker) history of European soccer, showing how shifting styles and influence have shaped the game
In the early 1990s, the Dutch footballing philosophy was worshipped across the continent. Then the baton passed to the Italians, who clearly boasted Europe's strongest league. But when France started winning everything at the international level its national academy became the template for others, until suddenly, almost out of nowhere, Europe's most revered player and manager both hailed from Portugal. Next, Barcelona and Spain won everything during a very obvious four-year period of dominance, before tiki-taka's decline meant Bayern and Germany took control. Finally, Europe's most successful coaches found themselves competing in England, introducing a brilliant cacophony of styles to the Premier League. Zonal Marking is a glorious travelogue through soccer's triumphant styles and characters.Author Biography

Wikipedia notes that Anson Dorrance has "one of the most successful coaching records in the history of athletics." Under Dorrance's leadership at the University of North Carolina (UNC), the Tar Heels women's soccer teams have won 22 of the 37 NCAA Women's Soccer Championships with a .881 winning percentage over 40 seasons. He has led his team to a 101-game unbeaten streak and his players have won 20 National Player of the Year awards. In The Vision of a Champion, Dorrance teams up with bestselling health and fitness writer Gloria Averbuch to deliver a transformational guide to developing soccer excellence at the high school and collegiate levels. This book combines practical strategies for training and competing with the wisdom and advice of a veteran coach.
Dorrance's advice is proven: thanks to his coaching, women's soccer at the University of North Carolina has dominated the collegiate field for more than four decades. The Vision of a Champion explains the secrets of that success in a narrative that is inspiring to athletes, coaches, and parents alike. The authors begin with a deep look into the world of women's soccer at UNC, from details of training to the all-important team culture that makes a good team great. The second section is a road map for aspiring star players: it discusses how to be a true student of the game and how to develop to one's full potential. The remainder of the book thoroughly examines what Dorrance learned as an elite coach who took the United States national team to its first world championship in 1991, analyzing all aspects of training, competition, fitness, and soccer mentality.
Complete with helpful training appendices and informative illustrations, Dorrance and Averbuch's book is introduced with a moving personal foreword by soccer icon Mia Hamm, one of Dorrance's former players, The Vision of a Champion is a major resource for all aspiring high school and college soccer players; between its covers are all the skills and character strengths needed to excel on and off the field.

At the time the club was not allowed to buy players due to debts and despite having young players with minimal Superleague experience, achieved European qualification which was the biggest surprise of the last few years in Greek football.
The book presents tools such as complete training plans, tables, and images regarding the design of the three main characteristics of physical fitness: endurance, strength, and speed. By further applying the proposed periodized plan on technical, tactical and mental/cognitive abilities we succeed improvement of the players' physical abilities as well as maximization of their soccer performance.
The proposed training plans are presented in a simple and straight-forward manner, thus the model is applicable to soccer clubs irrespective of their level of participation.
Special thanks to Dr. Konstantinos Patras MD, Ph.D. for his assistance in the practical application of the training plan as well as his contribution as a scientific advisor during the writing of the book.
