Part diary and part reportage, The Soccer War is a remarkable chronicle of war in the late twentieth century. Between 1958 and 1980, working primarily for the Polish Press Agency, Kapuscinski covered twenty-seven revolutions and coups in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. Here, with characteristic cogency and emotional immediacy, he recounts the stories behind his official press dispatches--searing firsthand accounts of the frightening, grotesque, and comically absurd aspects of life during war. The Soccer War is a singular work of journalism.

by Anson Dorrance (Author), Gloria Averbuch (Author)
Wikipedia notes that Anson Dorrance has "one of the most successful coaching records in the history of athletics." Under Dorrance's leadership at the University of North Carolina (UNC), the Tar Heels women's soccer teams have won 22 of the 37 NCAA Women's Soccer Championships with a .881 winning percentage over 40 seasons. He has led his team to a 101-game unbeaten streak and his players have won 20 National Player of the Year awards. In The Vision of a Champion, Dorrance teams up with bestselling health and fitness writer Gloria Averbuch to deliver a transformational guide to developing soccer excellence at the high school and collegiate levels. This book combines practical strategies for training and competing with the wisdom and advice of a veteran coach.
Dorrance's advice is proven: thanks to his coaching, women's soccer at the University of North Carolina has dominated the collegiate field for more than four decades. The Vision of a Champion explains the secrets of that success in a narrative that is inspiring to athletes, coaches, and parents alike. The authors begin with a deep look into the world of women's soccer at UNC, from details of training to the all-important team culture that makes a good team great. The second section is a road map for aspiring star players: it discusses how to be a true student of the game and how to develop to one's full potential. The remainder of the book thoroughly examines what Dorrance learned as an elite coach who took the United States national team to its first world championship in 1991, analyzing all aspects of training, competition, fitness, and soccer mentality.
Complete with helpful training appendices and informative illustrations, Dorrance and Averbuch's book is introduced with a moving personal foreword by soccer icon Mia Hamm, one of Dorrance's former players, The Vision of a Champion is a major resource for all aspiring high school and college soccer players; between its covers are all the skills and character strengths needed to excel on and off the field.

A celebration of the beautiful game and its 100 greatest players, from the pre-World War II exploits of Dixie Dean to the modern-day genius of Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi
These players left legacies, redefined the game with trademark skills, and grew into national icons. They have their stats--the goals, the wins, the trophies--but, more importantly, they have their stories.
One World Cup winner owned a nightclub that briefly transformed a corner of industrial Germany into one of the hippest places around. An Austrian forward's death is still shrouded in mystery. A striker who might have become a telephone technician had he not been spotted playing soccer was eventually elected president of his country.
And there are unanswered questions. How did Pelé's Brazil shirt from the 1958 World Cup quarterfinal go missing in a Welsh school? Which goalkeeper was so good that one opponent considered scoring against him akin to "winning a trophy"?
Through extensive research and interviews, The Athletic soccer staff, led by Oliver Kay and James Horncastle, discovered angles and tales that shine a new light on the sport's most compelling characters.
They faced an impossible riddle, too: Of the thousands of players to hit the pitch, who is the best? Their efforts to find the answer took the foremost sports newsroom on a journey, and what emerges is more than a ranking. Through all-new, vivid portraits of each athlete, The Soccer 100 is a tribute to the greatest players to have ever graced the most popular sport on the planet.

In recent years, player development has been a hot topic in the soccer world. With more pressure on coaches to win than ever before, the modern game seems to be less about actual players and more about tactical systems. In many places, the majority of training sessions are structured so that each player receives the same training as his or her teammates, even though they are asked to perform different functions. As a result, players do not receive specific feedback and lack the ability to produce functional skills in the heat of a game.
Aimed at football coaches of all levels, and players of all ages and abilities, The Modern Soccer Coach: Position-Specific Training seeks to identify, develop, and enhance the skills and functions of the modern soccer player whatever their position and role on the pitch.
This book offers unique insight into how to develop an elite program that can both improve players and win games. Filled with practical no-nonsense explanations, focused player drills, and more than 40 illustrated soccer templates, this book will help you - the modern coach - to create a coaching environment that will take your players to the next level.
Understand how the concept of player development needs to change as players progress in the game.
Examine how learning styles have changed and how coaches must adapt accordingly.
Enhance your players' performance levels with innovative exercises and ways to share feedback and critical information.

What's behind the success of certain professional soccer clubs? Is it money, luck, skill? The answer may surprise you..
The use of analytics in sport is now well embedded. 'Marginal gains', the bedrock upon which the cycling coach Dave Brailsford built his greatest successes are cornerstones of most sports nowadays. But, until recently, that did not apply to the biggest sport in the world. Not in soccer. It was as though this simplest of sports is too complicated for statistics. Or that only one statistic counts, the number of times the ball hits the back of the net. 'The only statistic that counts, ' there's an often used and annoying stock term.
However, in the last 10 years, professional soccer clubs of all levels of wealth and stature have bought into analytics. Data analysts are now a major part of every top professional club. They interact with players, advise coaches, examine the strengths and weaknesses of teams, establish likely tactical organization of different sides; even focus on what a referee might allow and penalize.
Here's what's Included In This Book:
- The reasons why top spending clubs like PSG and Manchester City don't always win
- How Analytics has helped Leicester City overcome the poverty gap in Soccer
- How Analytics has revolutionizing soccer training sessions and pre-match strategy sessions
- 3 Players who were chosen by professional soccer clubs using Analytics
- How Modern Analytics fared doing Soccer Predictions for the 2018 World Cup
- Analytics settles the great debate: Messi vs Ronaldo
- And much more
Even if you've never played soccer in your life, you will find this book informative and engaging.

Youth soccer presents a wealth of opportunities for children to build mental and physical strength, but parents are often expected to take on new roles as coaches and spectators to enhance their child's success. At first blush, these roles seem simple, but like most things in life, the rewards of youth soccer depend on how much effort both parent and child invest, and appropriate parental involvement is crucial.
Andy Beers embraced his role as a soccer dad and embarked on a sixteen-year adventure that spanned the childhoods of his three children, a big city, a small rural community, and two states. When he began, he was ignorant about everything related to soccer. By the time he was finished, he was a confident and knowledgeable coach. Still, like most parents, Andy frequently made potentially life-changing decisions involving his children but never knew how his actions would influence their futures. Now, he looks back and shares successful strategies, including coaching tips, parental advice, and dealing with the challenges of sportsmanship.
The Beers family's real-life soccer adventure provides surprising plot twists. The lessons learned serve as a useful guide for soccer parents, no matter if their child is a beginning or advanced player. Don't miss this incredible story or the opportunity to improve your soccer experience by learning from Andy's missteps and triumphs.

For legions of soccer fans, the players on the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team are the game's standard-bearers. Together their accomplishments include four World Cup titles and four Olympic gold medals. Within five years of their inaugural match in 1985, the team was the best women's soccer team on the planet. But its rise was neither easy nor harmonious. The national team came onto the scene when team sports for women were in their infancy. The players were paid little and played to sparse crowds on marginal pitches and carried their own equipment and luggage. They faced discrimination and unequal treatment, most notably from their governing bodies, FIFA and U.S. Soccer.
The Sisterhood is the story of the first and second generations of national team players, known as the 99ers, who were the driving force behind the rise of U.S. women's soccer and who built the foundation for the team's enduring success. Rob Goldman takes the reader onto the pitch and into the minds of the players and coaches for the team's greatest victories and most heartbreaking defeats. Among those featured are players Michelle Akers, Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm, and Brandi Chastain, as well as coaches Anson Dorrance and Tony DiCicco. When the team won the '99 World Cup in front of more than ninety thousand fans at the Rose Bowl, it was the largest crowd to ever attend a women's sporting event. After Brandi Chastain's winning penalty kick beat China, everything changed. These women's soccer players were no longer outcasts; they were hard-nosed players and leaders who not only transformed women's sports but led a cultural revolution. They were trailblazers, role models, and selfless best friends. Their story, told here largely in the voices of the players and coaches who were there, is epic and inspiring.Author Biography
Rob Goldman is the author of two baseball books, Once They Were Angels and Nolan Ryan: The Making of a Pitcher, and the novel Hauling Time.

Although soccer had long been the world's game when Michael J. Agovino first encountered it in 1982, here it was just a poor cousin to American football, to be found on obscure UHF channels and in foreign magazines. But as Agovino himself passionately pursued soccer, Americans got wise and turned it into one of the most popular sports in the country. Agovino's love affair with soccer is a portrait of the game's culture and an intimate history of the sport's coming of age in the United States.
Agovino's quest takes him from the unkempt field in the Bronx where he taught himself to play to some of the sport's most storied venues and historic matches. With Agovino we travel from school fields to Giants Stadium, then from England to Germany, Italy, and Spain, along the way taking in the final days of the North American Soccer League, the 1994 World Cup, and the birth of Major League Soccer. Offering the perspective of fan, player, and journalist, Agovino chronicles his obsession with the sport and its phenomenal evolution.

Are you a Soccer Agent and you have just started? You're not yet but you would like to be one of them? If you belong to one of these groups, let me ask you a question: Has anyone, ever, explained to you what this profession is about? I mean the day-to-day. Do you know what to do? And more important, do you know how to do it? I'll go further. Do you know the variables you have to pay special attention to? And the obstacles that will appear and how to overcome them? I will share with you the question I asked myself at the time: "I am already a FIFA agent, now what?" Tell me, is it familiar to you? Have you ever asked yourself this question? Now think about how you would feel if I told you that you can learn the keys of this profession from a practical point of view. Imagine yourself making a qualitative step forward as an agent! Sounds good, right? Well, it is possible. This is the book I wish I had read when I started. In my case it took me time to realize many things, so now I want you to save time and bad moments.

No sport in the world gets as much attention as soccer. Whether it is television, internet or hard print, soccer dominates sports coverage throughout the world. People scan the coverage for news, especially of their favorite club, however long their allegiance has been established. Not everyone knows the history of the game, its origins and the interesting stories that have emerged over the years. Here is a handy e-book that helps to fill that void in knowledge; easily readable and not too overwhelming in statistics.
It may just be a starting point for really keen fans who will find plenty that might inspire them to research in greater detail. Learn about the man who stood in third class rail to get to Glasgow to play for Great Britain just after World War II or the African soccer superstar that has just be voted in as President of his Country.
The face of soccer is certainly changing as more and more finance is being attracted from television and sponsorship. With finance has come a level of corruption and there have been a number of corruption trials already; an interesting subject for research in itself and a story that is far from finished yet.
The book gives some general thoughts on the future and readers will certainly have their own thoughts, especially if they are armed with more information on the Game, information they may well get in the pages of '' The Great Book of Soccer.''

You need to learn to be fast, flexible and focused on a soccer field while thousands of people are watching every move you make.
