The author, a devout golfing duffer, shares some of the pain (and occasional glory) he has experienced in 40-something years of playing in the rough while seeking the ever-elusive fairway.
The book recounts golf-related adventures, describes some often-eccentric friends and recounts experiences with a few celebrities. There also are occasional ruminations on such momentous matters as escalating golf purses and the obscure and controversial origins of golf. The book is a golf-centered memoir that tracks the humorous side of where the author has been and what he's done on the golf course and, once in a while, between rounds.by Donald Lemke (Author)

Did Hitler Die on a Golf Course is a compilation of the sayings of my students as they were said in my classes over the years of my teaching. I used to have a sign hung above me on the front wall so all could see. The sign read, "Be sure brain is engaged before putting mouth in gear." My students, mostly sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, decided to ignore the suggestion, and this book is a result of that decision.

Whether you are a casual golfer or one dedicated to the game, you will enjoy reading about the history of golf in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. The area has some of the finest golf courses in the world and can boast of a rich championship heritage. The first golf was played here in the early 1890s, and the first major championship was held at Cleveland's historic Euclid Club in 1907 when Jerome Travers won the U.S. Amateur. Canterbury, Firestone and other great courses in the area have been the site of a host of major PGA and amateur championships. All the great players from the past century-plus have walked the fairways of Northeast Ohio, including Hagen, Snead, Palmer, Nicklaus, Woods, and even Bobby Jones and Harry Vardon.

Witty, sarcastic, and humorously captivating. Real episodes with real golfers, and real funny. We called him "Mr. D," not his correct name, but one that he liked. Mr. D was rich enough to own all the pineapple fields on Oahu, but he'd rather sneak out and steal a few pineapples instead. "Hank" turns out to be a virulent "Hank-Enstein" in the chapter of the same name. You will discover that the three "Patrick's" have something more in common than their given names. "Doc," not an actual doctor, and Nick, who may have been the inspiration behind the cable TV series, The Sopranos, are more of the personalities who are the focus of these chapters. There are numerous books devoted to professional athletes. For the game of golf in particular, readers can find publications about Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, and many other pros. But what about the millions of amateurs who play the game? They are seriously overlooked-until now. "Great Chapters. Enjoyable and relatable for anyone who has spent any time around the game. Pete makes the many characters of the game we can all identify with come alive." -Andy Weissinger, PGA, 2009 PGA Patriot Award Winner. "Pete's lifelong love for the game has given experiences that any golf lover would enjoy. Read this and you will see why golf is more than a game. It has Character." -Nick Zanca, Director of Golf, Kiskiack Golf Club.

I wrote this book to show what a great job caddieing is and the many opportunities it affords. It's a life-changing job. If done right by the caddie master, this can open doors to the caddies that never would have happened in other jobs. As a caddie master, I would set up the caddie to put them in the right situation.
If the young caddie wanted to be an actor, lawyer, or car salesman or work on Wall Street, you would have them caddie for the members or guests that best suits their future ambitions. It's like a working interview. They can see how hard you work and how you interact with others and how professional you perform your job.
As a caddie master, it is your absolute responsibility to inform the college-bound caddies of the caddie scholarship programs that are available. So hopefully, this book can inspire young kids into the great world of caddieing. It's a life changer!

Every golfer alive knows that he or she has two ancestral homes: one's own, and Scotland. On her rolling shores the game of golf had its origins, and to walk the links of St. Andrews is to feel at one with the shepherd who decided one day to see how far he could whack a stone with his crook. Most serious golfers will make the pilgrimage to Scotland, to try to hit the Postage Stamp green at Troon, to trace the footsteps of Ben Hogan at Carnoustie, and to brave the challenge of the Road Hole at St. Andrews; all golfers dream of taking such a trip.
For the tourist or the dreamer, there can be no better guide than James W. Finegan. A passionate advocate of the game that's played on the links between land and sea, Finegan combines a writer's eye, a historian's knowledge, and a golfer's sense of wonder and apprehension to provide an impossibly ambitious grand tour of golf's native land. In a loop of a thousand miles that begins in Edinburgh and ends across the Firth of Forth in St. Andrews, Finegan covers some sixty courses, visiting the true shrines of the game, the courses that are well known and respected, and the little-known gems you might otherwise pass right by. He shares the history of the courses, both of their creation and of the most famous matches played there; he also writes marvelously about the scenic and strategic charms to be found as you play them yourself. And he provides all the information you need to make your arrangements to do just that -- because, unlike most championship courses in the United States, the great courses of Scotland are available to the public. In addition to his delightful descriptions of the golf to be found there, Finegan gives us his recommendations for places to stay, ranging from the most modest bed-and-breakfast to the most magnificent castle hotel. He describes the pleasures to be found off the beaten track: the spectacular views from a country road, or the ancient cathedral that's worth a stop on the way to the first tee. And because all the travel within the country is done by car, he spells out the actual routes from town to town and course to course. Blasted Heaths and Blessed Greens is a book to be read, to be savored, and to be tucked away in your suitcase when you finally undertake the journey of your dreams.Author Biography
James W. Finegan has made more than forty trips to the United Kingdom and Ireland since 1971, always with his golf clubs in tow. He has written extensively about the pleasures of links golf for Golf Magazine, Golf Journal, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and a variety of other publications. He lives in Villanova, Pennsylvani

Donald Gibson had it all. And then he screwed the pooch.
Donald and his fabulous blond hair found fame and success too easy and too early. He starred as a football player for the University of Maryland and brought his alma mater its first national championship. Out of college, he prospered as a celebrity salesman. But he took his good fortune for granted and his life went to hell. By his mid-forties, he's deep in debt, drunk, lumpy around the middle and sucking for air.
Donald makes a life-changing choice when the aunt who raised him dies and leaves him a unique bequest: he can have her fortune and her house on Lanai, a tiny and unheard-of Hawaiian island, but only if he remains on the island for three years. He moves into what looks like a community of religious kooks and discovers that golf, his passion, is the village religion. For Donald, the way back looks like a tap-in putt. It turns out to be a slippery, downhill four-footer that runs thirty yards past the hole.
Donald resigns himself to years of involuntary quietude and is befriended by villagers from all along the spectrum of oddity. David Kalakaua, a descendant of Hawaiian royalty, insists upon being called 'King' and goose steps about the village golf course, demanding that he be worshipped. Wendy Walker, who lives in fear of fire and brimstone, preaches that God gave his only son so that Christians could chip and putt like champions. Ramona is a naive teen who can drive a ball two-hundred and sixty yards and, unlike most of the villagers, plays with competitive heat. Tina is Ramona's mother and turns Donald in to her boy toy. And there is Bobby Joe Fu, a Chinese-North Carolinian-Baptist, former seminarian and failed touring pro - the village's spiritual leader - who makes Donald's rehabilitation his personal mission.
Church of Golf touches on themes every golfer will recognize: failure, hope, struggle and redemption. It also affirms what every golfer knows to be true: Learning to golf well is learning to live humbly.

After 90 years the story of black golf must be told. From the time when African chiefs indentured their tribe's youth to work as caddies, to the first black golf course, Bambata Boodhun playing in the British Open, and black golf courses laid out in the bush. Wonderful golfers such as Papwa Sewgolum winning three Dutch Opens, and two Natal Open beating Gary Player head-to-head and in so doing becoming the symbol of the anti-apartheid movement resulting in an assassination attempt and banning. Vincent Tshabalala winning the French Open then banned, and Lewis Chitengwa beating Tiger Woods twice, and many other stories. The author brings to life the trials and tribulations faced by people of colour trying to play a sport they loved. At the same time this is also an important reference work including tournament statistics and results beautifully illustrated featuring 53 colour and 86 black and white photographs, and their ranking within the context of Southern Africa golf. This sport collector's volume chronicles the major impact this sport had on breaking down the apartheid barrier and overcoming discrimination, determination, and the quest to win against all odds.It is a rare glimpse into the extraordinary lives of Southern Africa's top black golfers, and ultimately their induction into the Southern Africa Golf Hall of Fame.

In Breaking the Slump, NBC golf commentator Jimmy Roberts shares the "slump stories" of some of the greatest professional golfers of all time--from Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tom Watson to Phil Michelson and Dottie Palmer--offering valuable tips and strategies to help any player overcome that inevitable stretch of absolutely wretched golf.
Front Jacket
There are only two kinds of golfers in this world: those who've suffered a debilitating slump . . . and those who will sometime in their future.
For many of us, golf could be defined as long periods of aggravation punctuated by brief but dazzling moments of clarity and reward. But when those brief, satisfying moments disappear, when the ball seems to have a mind of its own, when our well-grooved swings suffer a complete and total collapse, we find ourselves in that panicked state known as a slump. Regardless of skill level, a slump can, and does, happen to everyone.
Here, for the first time ever, is a book about some of the worst times in the careers of some of the most successful people to ever play the game--Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, Paul Azinger, Hal Sutton, and Dottie Pepper, among others--and how they dug themselves out. A book that belongs in every golfer's locker, Breaking the Slump is an emotional and spiritual first aid kit for anyone who plays the game.

And, like us, sometimes right on the money.

Dave Marrandette's Can I Get a Ruling? Shares a conclusion about the rules of golf that the producers of TV's "Cops" and "Law & Order" hold about the laws of the land: They are more interestingly observed when broken. Considered abstractly, golf rules range from self-evident to law clerk-level complex. But when they are revealed through actual mishaps on the fairway, they become fascinating.
Most of the vignettes Marrandette has selected are from the past 50 years--the era of televised golf. But while you may recognize some of the names and even some of the moments, you'll see them in a new way through the prism of golf rules. They are all great golf moments and entertaining stories, but reading and considering them here may also improve your own mental golf game.
A sample ruling:
Chip Beck was tied for the lead during the third round of the 1992 Greater Greensboro Open when he pull-hooked his tee shot on the 14th. When he found his ball it had come to rest next to an out-of-bounds stake. Without thinking, Beck pulled the stake and began to prepare for his next shot. As he stood there with stake in hand, it dawned on him that maybe he should not have removed it. He replaced the stake and finished out the hole with a bogey. But the deed had been done. Even the act of pulling out the stake is an infraction. In the end he had to add two penalty strokes, giving him a triple-bogey. Eventually he finished in a tie for third, but without the penalty he would have finished in second place alone. The cost: $81,563.

by Ben Hogan (Author)
With a new introduction by Lee Trevino, this is the first definitive edition of the timeless golf classic that has sold over a million copies--now with never-before-seen photos and memorabilia, hand-selected from the Hogan estate archive, as well as nearly 100 pages of new writings that expand on Hogan's unbelievable life story and extraordinary career.
Over the past sixty-five years, millions of golfers have studied Ben Hogan's Five Lessons, making it the bestselling golf book of all time. Now, Hogan's masterpiece has received the definitive edition it deserves. Widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport, Hogan is especially known for his mastery of the golf swing. At the start of his career, he played with a hook that threatened to ruin his game, until he dedicated himself to correcting it--and in doing so, he gained a rare and hard-fought understanding of the fundamentals. Curious fans itched for clues about his legendary technique, dubbed "the secret," that allowed him to persevere and even return to the height of his powers after a car crash that shattered his body and almost took his life in 1949. His terse answer, "I dug it out of the dirt"--the dirt of the driving range--fueled the Hogan mystique. He went on to become one of only five players to win all four professional championships, claiming nine major championships in total. In 1957, Hogan partnered with Herbert Warren Wind, "the dean of American golf writers" (The New York Times), and illustrator Anthony Ravielli to capture his expertise from the peak of his career in a series of lessons. Hogan believed that any golfer with average coordination can learn to break eighty. In each chapter, a different tested fundamental is explained and demonstrated with clear illustrations, as though Hogan were giving you a personal lesson with the same skill and precision that made him a legend. Now expanded with a new introduction by Lee Trevino, essays about Hogan and the book's legacy, unpublished photos of the publicity-shy Hogan, and more, this definitive edition offers greater context and fresh insight into an icon of the game.by Gail W.
