by Kevin Garnett (Author), David Ritz (With)
NATIONAL BESTSELLER
A unique, unfiltered memoir from the NBA champion and fifteen-time all-star ahead of his induction into the Hall of Fame. Kevin Garnett was one of the most dominant players the game of basketball has ever seen. He was also one of its most outspoken. Over the course of his illustrious twenty-one-year NBA career, he elevated trash talk to an art form and never shied away from sharing his thoughts on controversial subjects. In KG A to Z, published ahead of Garnett's induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame, he looks back on his life and career with the same raw candor. Garnett describes the adversity he faced growing up in South Carolina before ultimately relocating to Chicago, where he became one of the top prospects in the nation. He details his headline-making decision to skip college and become the first player in two decades to enter the draft directly from high school, starting a trend that would be followed by future superstars like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. He shares stories of playing with and against Bryant, James, Michael Jordan, and other NBA greats, and he chronicles his professional ups and downs, including winning a championship with the Boston Celtics. He also speaks his mind on a range of topics beyond basketball, such as fame, family, racism, spirituality, and music. Garnett's draft decision wasn't the only way he'd forever change the game. His ability to play on the perimeter as a big man foreshadowed the winning strategy now universally adopted by the league. He applies this same innovative spirit here, organizing the contents alphabetically as an encyclopedia. If you thought Kevin Garnett was exciting, inspiring, and unfiltered on the court, just wait until you read what he has to say in these pages.Author Biography

by Tim Rooney (Author)
When John Beilein arrived at University of Michigan in 2007, the once-proud men's basketball program was adrift after failing to reach the NCAA Tournament for nine straight seasons. Over the next twelve years, he became the program's all-time winningest coach, reached two national championship games, won four Big Ten championships and produced eight NBA first-round draft picks.
In an age of ethical lapses throughout college basketball, Beilein succeeded without a hint of impropriety. As much a teacher as a coach, he consistently identified undervalued recruits, taught them his innovative offensive system and carefully developed them into better players--an approach to the game that drove his unprecedented rise from high school junior varsity coach to head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. This book examines his tenure at Michigan in detail for the first time.

My vision is to give players and coaches the best information so that they can improve their skill sets. When it comes to basketball, I have been involved in just about every aspect imaginable. Through a lot of hard work and a handful of lucky breaks I was able to live out one of my dreams of playing Division 1 basketball. One of my most well-known accomplishments was walking on at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and playing for the Tarheels during the 2005-2006 season. During that season we went 23-8 and made a 2nd round NCAA Tournament appearance. I also started at point guard for the Junior Varsity basketball team at UNC from 2002-2004. During my tenure as a Tarheel I played for Roy Williams (Head Basketball Coach at UNC/College Basketball Hall of Fame/Basketball Hall of Fame), Jerod Haase (Assistant Basketball Coach at UNC) and Doug Wojick (Head Basketball Coach at the University of Tulsa). I also played against numerous McDonald's High School All-Americans, Final Four MVPs, a Naismith Award Winner, 3 AP-All Americans, a Bob Cousy Award Winner, 1st and 2nd Round NBA Draft Picks, NBA players and other phenomenal basketball players. I was fortunate enough to coach with Mickey Bissette at Green Hope High School (4A classification) in Morrisville, NC off and on from 2002-2007 where we made 2 state playoff appearances and had 3 Division 1 players. I also coached an AAU team the Apex Force from 2005-2007 where we made appearances in 2 AAU National Championships, the Charlie Weber Invitational and the AAU Super Showcase in Orlando, FL. We also were ranked in the top 5 in our state during that time, won the North Carolina 17-U State Games Championship and the North Carolina USBA State Championship. I have also coached at the Roy Williams Basketball Camp, Herb Sendek Team Basketball Camp, Stanford University Basketball Camp, Elevate Basketball Clinics with Keith Moore (Assistant Basketball Coach at Iowa State University) among other camps and clinics. My goal with Hoops Education is to share this knowledge with other players and coaches to help them develop into the best person they can be and ultimately help them achieve their goals inside and outside the game of basketball.

Most of the books which deal with the game of basketball have been written with the college or professional player in mind. There is need for more books written from the standpoint of a coach who thinks in terms of high school players."How To Coach And Manage High-School Basketball Teams" is such a book. The author has had considerable successful experience in coaching high school teams. His philosophy of the game and his method of presenting the strategy of offense and defense is tempered by this experience. The plays which are diagrammed and the practice formations are based on actual coaching experience and they appear to have been culled with great care from the many which have been used experimentally. This book should prove to be of value not only to the player and beginning coach but also to the experienced coach who is always anxious to pick up ideas from drills and formations which have been used successfully by a co-worker. This book should find a place in every high school athletic library.

"Inner City Hoops", A Historical Account of Chicago Basketball is a unique publication. Both basketball junkies and social historians will enjoy the content. You will read about the top sixty basketball players in the history of Chicago.
The author gives readers a first hand look at what it's like to grow up in the inner city and make the most of the opportunities that present themselves through sports and education. This account gives you the view of the person who actually lived the inner city experience in Chicago. The reader sees a real-life view through the eyes of Calvin Davis, who gives this historical account along with his personal story. It will be exciting to learn how Chicago basketball has evolved over the past one hundred years, and how it has served as an avenue for upward mobility. This work of contemporary history gives the view of respected basketball historian Dr. Larry Hawkins, who speaks about the "Golden Triangle" where basketball talent in the city of Chicago was developed in the 1920s and 1930s. Sports Researcher, Robert Pruter who wrote the article about Early Phillips Teams indicated that "The Golden Triangle" allowed future basketball phenoms to develop their outstanding basketball skills which would change the face of basketball in the inner city in the years to come. You'll read about community spirit and growth, as well as indifference to racism. The Bronzeville neighborhood on the inner south side of Chicago and the near west side neighborhoods were the places where African Americans from the southern states migrated approximately 35 years after the civil war. This influx of African Americans led to Phillips High School becoming the first black high school in Chicago in the 1920's. The author, Calvin Davis grew up in Bronzeville more than 40 years later and sharpened his basketball skills at all 3 parts of the Golden Triangle. Calvin talks about his time as a member of the notorious Jr. Trotters, the city of Chicago's first traveling AAU type all star team of the modern era. You will read about the famed 2-2-1 press they employed that hunted down opposing ball handlers until they wilted from the relentless pressure, and how they beat any team, any time, any place, and anywhere. You'll also read about the success stories that were a result of the opportunities created, and the discipline learned in basketball that carried over into life skills. A large number of Jr. Trotters went on to not only College, NBA and European League basketball careers after college, but also to a variety of Professional Occupations. Many of them continue to give back to their communities today. In Calvin's case, after leaving the Trotters, he continued as an Honor - Student-athlete at Dunbar High on Jim Foreman's basketball team. He became a Scholarship Basketball Player at William Penn University, a Teacher in the Chicago Public Schools, an Elementary and High School Basketball Coach, a Citywide Sports Coordinator, a School Administrator, the Director of Sports Administration, Driver Education and Facilities for the City of Chicago's Public Schools, and now the author of "Inner City Hoops", a History of Chicago Basketball. The Bronzeville area in Chicago was the first home for many black families from the south and served as a home for many successful athletes. Basketball has been a springboard not only to the NBA, but to college scholarships and professional occupations for individuals like Calvin and countless others. The history in this book will expand the knowledge of readers, and provide enjoyment as well. The book was designed to be written as if a general basketball conversation is being held. As you read about the individual exploits of players, you'll feel the respect the author has for their talents along with his love for the game.by Emmet Ryan (Author)
From school gyms to the biggest arenas, I Like it Loud is a journey through the broad culture of European basketball. by Jerry Phipps (Author)
Why write a book on coaching basketball? I was a head basketball coach for thirty-six years, evenly divided between high school and junior college circles. I also served for ten seasons as a volunteer/assistant coach for three different coaching friends. Since retirement, I have had the desire to write a book on coaching the sport. I spent a career "Xing" and "O-ing."
Toni Morrison, Nobel Prize-winning author, was quoted as, "If there is a book that you want to read, and it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." With that quote in mind, I decided to direct my literary attention toward the beginning inexperienced, the novice, the apprentice, the rookie. I have attempted to fulfill that dream and, hopefully, to make some small contribution to a big game.

As a coach I always find one of the most challenging parts of my job is keeping the players motivated. One of the best ways I have found for doing this is to vary the drills I use in practice. Drills provide a powerful opportunity for coaches because they combine so many important elements of training at once. Drills can train all fundamental skills. They train the team to work together in speed, agility and execution. The flowing repetition of the drill allows the training to become second nature to the players. Using new and varied drills and incorporating them into our practices, we train a wide variety of fundamental skills and variations on basic offensive plays like the fast break. I have found that drills are often overlooked as an asset in coaching. No matter where I am coaching whether at a clinic, or watching the practice of a club in Europe, South America, an NCAA or high school team. I see that coaches around the world often get into a routine of the same drills every practice. If a drill becomes routine, then the players will lose interest and focus. I was inspired to write this book after coaching a group of professional players in the Euro2003 tournament in Spain. The players were from all over the world and they responded enthusiastically to my drills. Other coaches who attended the tournament also said my drills were unique and asked me to share my techniques with them.

Think somewhere between a sneeze and a seed.
The form, emotion, and pace feel like a sneeze: impulsive, frenetic, comforting, and starts and stops on dimes. The seed is the content solely derived from twenty-six first-person accounts of Virginia Men's Basketball from 2009, when head coach Tony Bennett and his staff arrived in Charlottesville, until 2019, when the program won its first National Championship, and after it became the first #1 seed to lose to a #16 seed in the NCAA Tournament the year prior.
Back in his coaching days, Dick Bennett, Tony's father, created a value system known as the Five Pillars (Humility, Passion, Unity, Servanthood, and Thankfulness). Tony continued the tradition at Virginia and gradually transformed the culture of the cellar-dwelling program he inherited into an elite, sustainable family that develops men of character, patience, potential, and tenacity to unlock that potential in basketball and beyond.
I spent a year-plus gathering video interviews averaging 45 minutes, and the initial transcriptions spanned over 225,000 words. I took myself out, culled for quality, humor, adversity, and wisdom, and edited the remnants for clarity while keeping them raw enough to mimic natural conversation. From there, I broke them into paragraphs and lines arranged in sections, themes, and years, and proceeded to stitch them together to form a collective memoir organized into an oral history of a decade.
The resulting 90,000 words let the players, coaches, staff members, and student managers tell their own tale. After the National Championship Game in 2019, journalists from all over the country hammered the two-year turnaround from the biggest upset in college basketball history in 2018, but that comeback story doesn't happen without the previous eight seasons' teams building upon one another and providing the platform for the National Championship to occur.
So, I made this: intangible.

Wars ravage Iraq and Afghanistan. An earthquake devastates Haiti. The economy is in crisis and America is in the death grip of partisan politics. But what really, really gets you down? Your college basketball team loses a key game. It kind of makes a person wonder--first, of course, about his priorities, but then, inevitably, about the nature of such an obsession, one clearly shared with millions of sports fans spanning the United States. In a book that begins with one fan's passion for a game, Andrew Malan Milward takes a deep dive into sports culture, team loyalty, and a shared sense of belonging--and what these have to do with character, home, and history.
At the University of Kansas--where the inventor of the sport coached its first team--basketball is a religion, and Milward is a devoted follower with a faith that has grown despite time and distance. Jayhawker, his first venture into nonfiction, bears the marks of the accomplished storyteller. Sharply observed, deftly written, and often as dramatic as its subject, the book pairs personal memoir with cultural history to conduct us from the world of the athlete to the literary life, from competition to camaraderie, from the history of the game to the game as a reflection of American history at its darkest hour and in its shining moments. A journey through one man's obsession with basketball, Jayhawker: On History, Home, and Basketball tells a quintessential American story.by Elijah N. Gurash (Author)

For three decades, Al McGuire was the heart and soul of college basketball, first as the street-smart head coach at Marquette University and later as the hoops-savvy television analyst whose unique mix of humor, candor, and uncanny insights brought a whole new dimension to sports broadcasting. McGuire was the consummate professional at whatever he did. Possessing an impeccable insider's knowledge of the game, he was able to communicate to viewers in ways that were as entertaining as they were informative. He made people laugh, he could laugh at himself, and his joy for the game and people in it made him one of sports' most enduring icons.McGuire passed away at the age of seventy-two in early 2001 after a long illness, leaving behind a basketball-rich legacy that had its poetic qualities as well. Never was that more evident than in the 1976-77 season, when McGuire announced to his team in midseason that it would be his last year in coaching. The season ended with McGuire overcome by emotion, sitting on the Marquette bench with tears streaming down his face as the Warriors gave their beloved coach the ultimate going-away present, a national championship. Thus ended a twenty-year coaching career in which McGuire completed a 405-143 record, including a 295-80 mark at Marquette. In I Remember Al McGuire, the legendary basketball coach and announcer is remembered by dozens of associates, who offer their favorite anecdotes, insights, assessments, and other assorted memories of a basketball junkie as quick with a quip as he was with a word of encouragement. Among those contributing to this book are his former players and assistant coaches as well as other head coaches, media personalities, friends, and associates who knew him well at one time or another in his life

A thought-provoking exploration of how basketball--and the values rooted in the game--can solve today's most pressing issues, from the professor behind the popular New York University course
NBA and WNBA superstars, Hall of Fame players, coaches, and leading cultural figures have all dropped by New York University Professor David Hollander's course "How Basketball Can Save the World" course to debate and give insights on how the underlying principles of the game can provide a new blueprint for addressing our diverse challenges and showing what's possible beyond the court. Now, in How Basketball Can Save the World, Hollander takes us out of the classroom to present a beautiful new philosophy with contributions by many of his past guests and based on values inherent to basketball, such as inclusion and the balancing of individual success with the needs of the collective. These principles move us beyond conflict and confusion toward a more harmonious and meaningful future:- Positionless-ness: In basketball, players aren't siloed into just one position or responsibility. In life, we can learn to be more adaptive to the challenges we face by embracing a positionless mindset.
- Human Alchemy: We talk a lot about team chemistry, but team alchemy means the creation of something totally new--a team far greater than the sum of its parts.
- Sanctuary: Basketball offers players a critical space to feel safe, free, and expressive. Fostering similar spaces in the real world can encourage people to be their best, happiest, and most productive selves.
- Transcendence: Basketball is about defying gravity, becoming weightless, and flying higher than anyone ever has before. By seeking out this principle, we can elevate ourselves and those around us to a new plane of experience.
Whether you're a seasoned veteran of the game or have never set foot on a court, How Basketball Can Save the World will empower you to become more resilient, tolerant, and wise in your relationship with yourself, others, and the world around you.

by Frank J. Basloe (Author), D. Gordon Rohman (Author), Michael A. Antonucci (Introduction by)
Frank J. Basloe grew up in Herkimer, New York, where YMCA director Lambert Will developed the game of basketball. Basloe's classic memoir, I Grew Up with Basketball, offers an eyewitness account of the humble roots of the imposing enterprise that is professional basketball today. At age sixteen, Basloe began his career as a promoter and managed several teams that regularly toured New York, New England, and the Midwest, including the Oswego Indians and Basloe's Globe Trotters. Until the 1920s and the advent of the New York Original Celtics, New York Renaissance, and Harlem Globetrotters, Basloe's clubs reigned supreme among barnstormers.
I Grew Up with Basketball is a fascinating and entertaining memoir of basketball's infancy and, for some, fuels the debate about the game's true origins by providing a counternarrative to the sanctioned history offered by the Hall of Fame. Though James Naismith's original concept is acknowledged, Basloe credits YMCA director Will for altering the game to be more exciting and fun to play as well as establishing early rules of play.
This rare firsthand glimpse of the early days of basketball is complimented by Michael A. Antonucci's introduction, which tracks the game--from Basloe's Globe Trotters to LeBron James--and its trappings as a business vehicle.
Author Biography
Frank J. Basloe (1887-1966) was born in Hungary, and his family immigrated to the United States in the late nineteenth century. Michael A. Antonucci is a professor of English and American studies at Keene State College.

College basketball and its annual March Madness extravaganza have emerged over the last three decades as one of the most popular sporting phenomena in America. Perhaps no one personifies the excitement of this tournament better than Jim Valvano, whose heavily underdog North Carolina State Wolfpack achieved the pinnacle of success in college basketball in 1983 with an unlikely run through the NCAA Tournament, culminating in an incredible one-point victory over Houston's heavily favored Phi Slamma Jamma squad in the championship game.
While that Cinderella story was Valvano's only national championship, he quickly came to symbolize the exuberance and excellence of the exciting world of college basketball. Valvano transcended his sport, touching millions as he emerged as one of the most charismatic and, ultimately, courageous figures in American life who touched millions.
Diagnosed with bone cancer, he joined ESPN to comment on college basketball games. Later he received the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at ESPN's first ESPY Awards, where he announced that he was starting the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Shortly after receiving the award, he died at the age of forty-seven. In I Remember Jim Valvano, he is remembered by former players, fellow coaches, a variety of other basketball experts, close associates, and many others as one of college basketball's great movers and shakers, a man with a heart as big as his popularity. Valvano's life is the classic story of courage and determination as borne out in his memorable line: Don't give up. Don't ever give up"".""

Finally there is a scientific way to answer these and other questions. The author, a former economics professor, business consultant and sports enthusiast, has accurately accomplished that feat using a methodology - known as the Performance Efficiency Rating (PER) system - which he developed in 1996. This methodology has accurately determined the regular season MVP in three of the last four NBA seasons, and which team is most likely to win the NBA championship (predicted the eventual champion in seven of the last ten years). In addition, between November 1, 1946, when the first NBA game was played, and game seven of the 2005 NBA Finals in which the San Antonio Spurs out-muscled the Detroit Pistons for the championship, precisely 3,572 players have suited up for a basketball game in the long and storied histories of the NBA and American Basketball Association (ABA). All of these players were evaluated using this PER methodology. In the end however, only the stories of the top 100 are presented here. The top 100 will surprise many, and will cause you to rethink your own top 50 greatest players (or at least the NBA's top 50 from 1996). As to the overall greatest player in pro basketball history why don't we let you read it to find out.

Keith Thompson is a graduate of Columbia University's Graduate School of Business, and also lectured economics to college students in New York. Returns & Refunds
Standard U.S. returns are accepted for eligible new, unopened items within 30 days of carrier delivery. Returns are by mail. Customers are responsible for standard return shipping, there is no restocking fee, and standard exchanges are not offered. Once an approved return is received and inspected, the refund is issued to the original payment method within 5 business days. Damaged, defective, or incorrect items are handled at no return-shipping cost to the customer.
Return eligibility is subject to the full policy. Opened, read, or unsealed books with broken seals or visible wear are final sale. Digital downloads, gift cards, and personalized products are non-refundable. Original shipping charges are not refunded for standard returns.
