by Shawn Fury (Author)
Sportswriter Shawn Fury's Rise and Fire: The Origins, Science, and Evolution of the Jump Shot presents an exploration of the play that revolutionized basketball and provided the greatest moments in the sport's history--from Michael Jordan's legacy-defining jumpers to Ray Allen's mastery and more.
It's hard to believe that there was a time when the jump shot didn't exist in basketball. When the sport was invented in 1891, players would take set shots with both feet firmly planted on the ground. Defenders controlled the sport, the pace was slower, and games would frequently end with scores fit for a football field. It took almost forty years before players began shooting jump shots of any kind and sixty-five years before it became a common sight. When the first jump shooting pioneers left the ground, they rose not only above their defenders, but also above the sport's conventions. The jump shot created a soaring offense, infectious excitement, loyal fans, and legends. Basketball would never be the same.

by Scott Morrow Johnson (Author), Judy Allen Morris (Foreword by)
Remembered in name but underappreciated in legacy, Forrest "Phog" Allen arguably influenced the game of basketball more than anyone else.
In the first half of the twentieth century, Allen took basketball from a gentlemanly, indoor recreational pastime to the competitive game that would become a worldwide sport. Succeeding James Naismith as the University of Kansas's basketball coach in 1907, Allen led the Jayhawks for thirty-nine seasons and holds the record for most wins at that school, with 590. He also helped create the NCAA tournament and brought basketball to the Olympics. Allen changed the way the game is played, coached, marketed, and presented. Scott Morrow Johnson reveals Allen as a master recruiter, a transformative coach, and a visionary basketball mind. Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Wilt Chamberlain, and many others benefited from Allen's knowledge of and passion for the game. But Johnson also delves into Allen's occasionally tumultuous relationships with Naismith, the NCAA, and University of Kansas administrators. Phog: The Most Influential Man in Basketball chronicles this complex man's life, telling for the first time the full story of the man whose name is synonymous with Kansas basketball and with the game itself.Author Biography

by Phillip Rucker (Author)
Rucker Basketball Wars is the book basketball fans of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and economic backgrounds have been waiting for. This is not your usual sports folderol book. It is a dialogue with the reader that allows him to make up his own mind about what he thinks, according to the reader's own personal code of conduct. After reading this book the reader may realize that Phillip Rucker writes like people talk around the dinner table at home or around the water cooler at work. He gives you straight talk ignoring political correctness. Street basketball's influence on basketball evolution and American culture has never been so clear. Unlike previous attempts at street ball books or movies, this is the information all the hype is based upon, in the real evolution of modern basketball since Dr. Naismith invented the game. Whether you like this book or not is not the issue. It is required reading for any self respecting, serious basketball fan. Sports writers and movie companies have been fighting for years to tell this story of the Rucker Basketball Tournament. Finally someone from the inside, the son of Holcombe Rucker, decided to open Pandora's box; and the truth will change basketball history forever. You find out why there have been imitation Rucker books and movies, but the real deal has never been presented to the sports world. This book is the first and last word on street basketball's true beginnings. Some of the topics and targets Phil takes on along the way include: - The War in Iraq: Portions of this book were written while the war in Iraq was in full swing. The Rucker Basketball Wars have some interesting parallels. - Rucker Park: Why the cathedral of street basketball is Rucker Park and why NBA pro basketball players have continued to defy politically correct mandates from the NBA for fifty plus years to make the pilgrimage to Rucker Park. - Black Community Youth Politics: Phil takes a look at the Rucker Family and Rucker Clan politics dealing with youth. He also examines some of the motivations of the black leadership establishment regarding youth politics. - Rucker Glamour: Unlike some other Rucker media events you get the glamour of Rucker Park the way it really is and was. It's vibrancy makes all street ball media events pale beside the truth of Rucker Basketball glamour. It shows the luster of Rucker Street Basketball rubbing off on American advertising, the NBA, and the Hip Hop community. - Black/White Family Relationships: Phil takes a look at what's right and wrong with families on both sides of the race scale sparing neither side. Along the way he takes on sacred cows, like certain disruptive media types and the black leadership decision-making process. Of course Phil is also very solution oriented. He gives and he takes but always says what he thinks clearly. The bottom line is you are a serious basketball fan and you want to find out the basketball environment the NBA players really grew up in and not some hyped, stereotyped, inner city basketball "B" movie or book; then "Rucker Basketball Wars" is the book you've been waiting for. The only street basketball book you will ever have to read again. It's a page-turner you may try to read in one sitting. It's that good!

A definitive treatise on modern basketball defense for players and coaches.
by Wade Davies (Author)
A prominent Navajo educator once told historian Peter Iverson that "the five major sports on the Navajo Nation are basketball, basketball, basketball, basketball, and rodeo." The Native American passion for basketball extends far beyond the Navajo, whether on reservations or in cities, among the young and the old. Why basketball--a relatively new sport--should hold such a place in Native culture is the question Wade Davies takes up in Native Hoops.
Indian basketball was born of hard times and hard places, its evolution traceable back to the boarding schools--or "Indian schools"--of the early twentieth century. Davies describes the ways in which the sport, plied as a tool of social control and cultural integration, was adopted and transformed by Native students for their own purposes, ultimately becoming the "Rez ball" that embodies Native American experience, identity, and community. Native Hoops travels the continent, from Alaska to North Carolina, tying the rise of basketball--and Native sports history--to sweeping educational, economic, social, and demographic trends through the course of the twentieth century. Along the way, the book highlights the toils and triumphs of well-known athletes, like Jim Thorpe and the 1904 Fort Shaw girl's team, even as it brings to light the remarkable accomplishments of those whom history has, until now, left behind. The first comprehensive history of American Indian basketball, Native Hoops tells a story of hope, achievement, and celebration--a story that reveals the redemptive power of sport and the transcendent spirit of Native culture.by Prentice Beverly (Author)

This is a 'Who-dun-it' novel about a murder of a member of the Portland, Maine Flounders organization, a minor league basketball team, affiliated with Boston's major league team, the Shamrocks. The Flounders were an eclectic ensemble of U.S. and foreign players, young and old, black and white, urban and city, ex-college and ex-high-school players. The reader will be treated to a modicum of basketball strategies, enough to understand the teams' journey to the "G" League national championship, but will not be pulled into the weeds of basketball. The coach, Butch Baker, a farm boy who entered the Marines after graduating from Annapolis got shot in the arm from a Taliban sniper and upon recovery played several years for the Boston Shamrocks. The tension between the team and coach is gripping as the cultures and backgrounds clash. The coach does not understand the Woke culture and is oblivious to the triggering he causes with some of his draconian remarks and actions. The reader, teased by the title, knows a murder will happen but gets sidetracked by the personal interaction between players with players and the coach with players. The reader is attached to the wily coach, but knows his imperfections and awaits a foul play. Suspense continues in the book until late in the game when the culprit is finally revealed.

The rousing story of two trailblazing superstars--Julius "Dr. J" Erving and Moses Malone--whose improbable alliance and unsung legacies shaped the wildest and most innovative era of basketball history.
In the early 1970s, playground courts across the United States were jammed with hoops buffs experimenting with showy moves and aerial shots that were changing the look and feel of a sport once stubbornly earthbound. Out of this scene emerged a pair of incomparable yet dissimilar streetball sensations, both of whom would make their name in the American Basketball Association, an upstart professional league characterized as much by flamboyance as invention. Julius Erving, better known as Dr. J, became a mythic figure whose airborne acrobatics inspired an army of high-flying acolytes. Moses Malone, a down-and-dirty banger, scrambled basketball apprenticeships forever by skipping directly from high school to the pros. Into the 1980s, Erving and Malone switched leagues, won MVPs, shattered records, and led their respective clubs into the playoff's championship round. But one prize eluded them: an NBA title. After suffering perennial defeat at the hands of Magic Johnson's Los Angeles Lakers and Larry Bird's Boston Celtics, the two eventually joined forces on the Philadelphia 76ers, blending their contrasting talents into a seamless whole. Together, Erving and Malone set out to accomplish what no other NBA team fronted by ex-ABA superstars had managed. An enthralling social history as well as an uplifting underdog story, Moses and the Doctor intimately chronicles the hopes and heartbreaks of two basketball legends who revolutionized what was possible on the ground and in the air, and fueled one of the most thrilling and momentous championship seasons ever.Author Biography

by Keith Brian Wood (Author)
Memphis Hoops tells the story of basketball in Tennessee's southwestern-most metropolis following the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Keith Brian Wood examines the city through the lens of the Memphis State University basketball team and its star player-turned-coach Larry Finch. Finch, a Memphis native and the first highly recruited black player signed by Memphis State, helped the team make the 1973 NCAA championship game in his senior year. In an era when colleges in the south began to integrate their basketball programs, the city of Memphis embraced its flagship university's shift toward including black players. Wood interjects the forgotten narrative of LeMoyne-Owen's (the city's HBCU) 1975 NCAA Division III National Championship team as a critical piece to understanding this era. Finch was drafted by the Lakers following the 1973 NCAA championship but instead signed with the American Basketball Association's Memphis Tams. After two years of playing professionally, Finch returned to the sidelines as a coach and would eventually become the head coach of the Memphis State Tigers.
Wood deftly weaves together basketball and Memphis's fraught race relations during the post-civil rights era. While many Memphians viewed the 1973 Tigers' championship run as representative of racial progress, Memphis as a whole continued to be deeply divided on other issues of race and civil rights. And while Finch was championed as a symbol of the healing power of basketball that helped counteract the city's turbulence, many black players and coaches would discover that even its sports mirrored Memphis's racial divide. Today, as another native son of Memphis, Penny Hardaway, has taken the reigns of the University of Memphis's basketball program, Wood reflects on the question of progress in the city that saw King's assassination little more than forty years ago.
In this important examination of sports and civil rights history, Wood summons social memory from an all-too-recent past to present the untold--and unfinished--story of basketball in the Bluff City.

Moses Malone overcame abject poverty in segregated Petersburg, Virginia, to become the first modern-day basketball player to jump directly from high school to the pros, paving a path for future stars such as Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, and LeBron James to follow. Moses Malone: The Life of a Basketball Prophet tells the story of Malone's ascent in the early 1970s to becoming the premier player in the world for a five-year period.
The young Malone prophesied his improbable rise and succeeded where others later failed because of his strength of character and unparalleled work ethic. Malone dominated his years in the NBA with a relentless determination that made him the greatest offensive rebounder in basketball history--a record he holds to this day. From 1979 to 1983 he won three of the NBA's Most Valuable Player awards and with Julius Erving helped to deliver the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA championship in 1983. He remains one of just nine players to win the NBA MVP award three or more times. In many ways Malone was an anti-superstar. He lacked a signature move, displayed almost no ego, and shunned the spotlight to the detriment of his commercial appeal. Shy by nature and self-conscious about a speech impediment, Moses kept his distance from the media, some of whom mistook his reticence for stupidity. A man of few words, he possessed a magnetism rooted in humility, authenticity, and passion. Moses was a giver, equally generous in assisting a friend as he was mentoring younger players, including Charles Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon. While his contemporaries preened for the cameras, Moses remained the "lunch pail superstar," a quiet and humble teammate who expressed himself through his tireless effort on the court and compassion off it.Author Biography

Few cities can claim a hardwood heritage like that found in metro Detroit. Metro Detroit has been the epicenter for cataclysmic change in the past 60 years that no other major American city has suffered, but the one constant among so much upheaval is a passionate following afforded high school basketball. The rise and fall of the automotive industry, the Motown record label's emergence and eventual relocation, social and racial unrest, and the polarization of one of America's great cities has not slowed the love and passion Detroiters-city and suburban dwellers alike-share for prep basketball.
by Earl Lloyd (Author), Sean Kirst (Author), David Bing (Foreword by)
In 1950, future Hall of Famer Earl Lloyd became the first African American to play in a National Basketball Association game. Nicknamed "Moonfixer" in college, Lloyd led West Virginia State to two CIAA Conference and Tournament Championships and was named All-American twice. One of three African Americans to enter the NBA at that time, Lloyd played for the Washington Capitals, Syracuse Nationals, and Detroit Pistons before he retired in 1961.
Throughout his career, he quietly endured the overwhelming slights and exclusions that went with being black in America. Yet he has also lived to see basketball--a demonstration of art, power, and pride--become the black national pastime and to witness the inauguration of Barack Obama. In a series of extraordinary conversations with Sean Kirst, Lloyd reveals his fierce determination to succeed, his frustration with the plight of many young black men, and his sincere desire for the nation to achieve true equality among its citizens.Author Biography

Hershel Kimbrell served as head basketball coach at McMurry University for thirty-one years, winning 448 games and being named to the NAIA Hall of Fame. His teams were mostly too small, too short, and too slow, perhaps, but they were the giant slayers, defeating top-ranked programs for one reason. Coach Kimbrell taught his players they were better than they were, and they believed him.Never Afraid, Never A Doubt is the biography of a man who believed in building winners. And it had little to do with the scoreboard. It is the story of a man as seen through the eyes of his players. He told them: "When every muscle and joint and ligament in your body is telling you it's time to quit and you refuse to quit, you'll dig down deep into a place you didn't know you had, and you'll find out you can accomplish more than you ever thought possible. At McMurry, we take the word "quit" out of the dictionary."As Chris Beard, head basketball coach at Texas Tech University said, "If the talent on the floor was close, Coach Kimbrell would beat you every time.

A typical NBA game can yield approximately 2,800 statistical events in thirty-two different categories. In Numbers Don't Lie Yago Colás started with a simple question: How did basketball analytics get from counting one stat, the final score, to counting thousands? He discovered that what we call "basketball"--rules, equipment, fundamental skills, techniques, tactics, strategies--has changed dramatically since its invention and today encompasses many different forms of play, from backyards and rec leagues to the NBA Finals.
Numbers Don't Lie explores the power of data to tell stories about ourselves and the world around us. As advanced statistical methods and big-data technologies transform sports, we now have the power to count more things in greater detail than ever before. These numbers tell us about the past, present, and future that shape how basketball is played on the floor, decisions are made in front offices, and the sport is marketed and consumed. But what is the relationship between counting and what counts, between quantification and value? In Numbers Don't Lie Colás offers a three-part history of counting in basketball. First, he recounts how big-data basketball emerged in the past twenty years, examines its current practices, and analyzes how it presents itself to the public. Colás then situates big data within the deeper social, cultural, and conceptual history of counting in basketball and beyond and proposes alternative frameworks of value with which we may take fuller stock of the impact of statistics on the sport. Ultimately, Colás challenges the putative objectivity of both quantification and academic writing by interweaving through this history a series of personal vignettes of life at the intersection of basketball, counting, and what counts.Author Biography
Yago Colás is the author of Ball Don't Lie! Myth, Genealogy, and Invention in the Cultures of Basketball. Currently an independent researcher and writer, he previously taught literature and cultural studies at the University of Michigan.

Montana State's Golden Bobcats celebrates a storied history from the hardwood
Ashworth Cat Thompson and brothers Frank and Orland Ward didn't know what to expect when they left southern Utah in the Fall of 1926. They arrived in Bozeman to play on the Montana State College basketball team under charismatic coach and fellow Utah native Ott Romney and Assistant Coach Schubert Dyche. Teamed with Montana products Brick Breeden and Max Worthington the following season, the core formed one of the best teams in the country. Despite Romney returning to Provo at the end of 1928, the Bobcats persevered in '29 under Schubert to win the consensus college national basketball championship, with Cat and Frank Ward earning All-American honors.
Author Paul R. Wylie recounts the on and off court challenges and triumphs of the Bobcats' Golden team
by John Christgau (Author)
Imagine a boy, five feet tall and one hundred pounds, who wants to play high school basketball. Now imagine that he was blind until the age of six and that he's the first black student to attend his suburban school. And there you have Michael Thompson in 1965 in San Bruno, California. He played at the school where a young English teacher was coaching "lightweight basketball," a competition for smaller players that has since disappeared. The team that Coach John Christgau put together came to be called the Whiz Kids for the way they rocketed up and down the court, led by Michael and invariably winning.
Michael and the Whiz Kids tells the story of the team's 1968 championship season. It is a tale of cliffhanger games and players as outsized in character as they are short in stature, from the wild-haired, bespectacled "Professor" to the well-traveled Latvian dubbed "Suitcase" to the quiet and tenacious "Salt," as in "of the earth." But it is also a tale of the time--of counterculture, suburbia, integration, and racial brawls erupting on the court. In Christgau's deft telling, it is an absorbing, often comic story of coming of age, for coach and Whiz Kids alike.

Year round on Martha's Vineyard Island off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, residents and vacationers have played basketball--almost since the game was invented. The Oak Bluffs summer league on the Island was innovative, ethnically diverse, welcomed female players, and fostered thousands of friendships. President Obama, NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving, and Family Matters sitcom star Jaleel White have all played basketball on Martha's Vineyard, as did future college stars, authors, war heroes, and entrepreneurs. Their stories touch current events from World War I through the Civil Rights Movement--and even include the filming of the blockbuster Jaws.
Martha's Vineyard Basketball: How a Resort League Defied Notions of Race and Class follows the rich history of basketball on the Island and tells the stories of the players and coaches themselves. During the heyday of Martha's Vineyard basketball in the 1970s and '80s, the courts provided a place for friendships that looked past social class and race--a unique situation given that nearby cities such as Boston were sites of violent demonstrations against integration. Original interviews with those who were there not only reveal the racial dynamics on Martha's Vineyard, but also relate amusing anecdotes of encounters with celebrities that include Charles Lindbergh, James Cagney, Frank Sinatra, and future star James Taylor. Martha's Vineyard Basketball reveals little-known aspects of the Island, shares the realities and triumphs of residents and vacationers alike, and demonstrates the unifying power of basketball. New Englanders, basketball fans, and those interested in race and class relations will all find this book a noteworthy account of a singular place.Author Biography
