For nearly forty years, Sam and Rose Maceo ruled a far-reaching underground economy of illegal booze and gambling but used their influence to infuse the "Free State of Galveston" with glamour, fame and fortune--a vision later used as a template for Las Vegas. The island city responded in kind, and its acceptance of the Maceos insulated their empire for decades. Pairing personal interviews of living descendants with her own meticulous research, Kimber Fountain lifts the veil on the Maceo family's closely guarded heritage.
Author Biography
A native of the Texas Gulf Coast and longtime resident of Galveston Island, Kimber Fountain has previously published two other books on the city's rich history: Galveston Seawall Chronicles and Galveston's Red Light District: A History of the Line. She also serves as chair of the Arts & Historic Preservation Advisory Board to Galveston's City Council and is occasionally seen on stage at the Island East-End Theatre Company.

Returns & Refunds

Customers are responsible for standard return shipping, there is no restocking fee, and standard exchanges are not offered. Once an approved return is received and inspected, the refund is issued to the original payment method within 5 business days. Damaged, defective, or incorrect items are handled at no return-shipping cost to the customer.
