A tribute to a pioneering author who made generations of children dream and whose legacy lives on today.
Madrid, 1928. Buried amid the pages of a magazine is the first story about a girl who will go on to charm all Spain. Her name is Celia. We know everything about Celia -- what she says, her adventures, her fantasies -- but very little about the person who created her: Elena Fortún. The acclaimed author of Un destino propio, María Montesinos, focuses on the thirteen years during which Fortún became Spain's most popular author. Covering the period from her arrival in Madrid during the fervor of the Second Republic until her exile, this book is a sensitive and elegant portrait of an enigmatic woman who inspired young girls to strive for freedom. In its pages, we discover an eventful life touched by tragedy: the death of Fortún's young son, her complex relationship with her soldier husband, her friendships with the leading intellectuals of the times, and her forbidden love affair with the woman who would steal her heart.
