by Susan Methven (Author)
Emily is excited to tell her family about her new friend from school.... "and he has black skin...." Being told not to say black skin, she is confused and upset. She likes his skin! Meemaw navigates Emily's first lesson of many on racism and empathy as seen through Emily's eyes.
This realistic story is compelling and invokes strong emotions. It will open the line of communication about race, interracial friendships, and racial discomfort passed along unintentionally. The author carefully keeps the subject simple for a young child. The storyline is strategically written to initiate and continue the dialogue surrounding racism.
Read this book today and begin the necessary conversations promoting empathy and compassion.
