How Renaissance Old Masters expanded the terms and vocabulary of portraiture
In the Renaissance, artists across Europe produced lifelike portraits with new virtuoso realism and exactitude, immortalizing not only kings and noblemen but, increasingly, bankers, merchants and scholars. These paintings, busts, prints and drawings still bear witness to the power, status, ambitions, friendships and religious convictions of their subjects. Whether they are lovers, celebrities or religious devotees, the people portrayed here implore the onlookers not to forget them. This compendium--innovatively designed by Irma Boom--includes more than 100 portraits from collections around the world.
Artists include: Hans Holbein II, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Memling, Antonello da Messina, Petrus Christus, Titian, Jan Borman the Younger, Renier van Thienen, Hans Holbein the Younger, Jan Gossart, Sofonisba Anguissola, Albrecht Dürer, Jan Jansz Mostaert, Petrus Christus, Lorenzo Lotto, Maerten van Heemskerck, Piero di Cosimo, Hans Memling and Paolo Veronese.
