by A. C. Lanaway (Author)
Every family has its share of secrets, but for twelve-year-old Nikki McBride, her mother, and brother, those secrets force them to flee their big-city home. Settling down in a rural prairie town, they hope to escape the threats of her recently deceased father's disreputable acquaintance. Soon after, Nikki begins experiencing unsettling dreams that reveal details from the past she couldn't possibly have witnessed-and they're growing progressively more frightening.
Making friends and enemies along the way, Nikki and her dog, Chase, set out to uncover the dangerous secrets her mother has kept hidden for thirty years. Strange and unexplainable
events lead her to an abandoned mansion, which seems to hold the key to her family's long-buried past. As her uncanny abilities develop, Nikki tries desperately to hide, but a relative she didn't know existed crosses her path and may understand more than even Nikki knows. Intent
to resolve his wrongful conviction and find a way to reveal the true murderer, Nikki strives to use her powers to bring the killer, finally, to justice. But finding the answers she so desperately
needs will unleash an evil upon her family that could destroy them all.
Set in rural Canada in the 1970s, Nikki McBride weaves mystery, fabulism, and family drama into a thrilling Young Adult novel. With its strong female protagonist, historical setting, and the struggles of small-town life and single-mother families, this book explores prairie life in all its community-centred heart and eerie isolation.
