People today love having an inventors notebook for the same reason that Leonardo Da Vinci did, back in his day. It allows an inventor to fully integrate every aspect of the process. One can mix musings and calculations next to each other. Art and drawings can find themselves encircled by mathematical proofs of how it might become reality.
