Drew Charlesworth--an accomplished mathematical genius working on a medical experiment with his partner Dr. Kingsly, creating a computerized prosthesis to be one day fused with its human subject--was also gifted with an unusual ability to hit a baseball. This skill, once he reached the major league, thrust him into the limelight, exposing his other work, which angered political and religious Conservatives.
This is a story how Drew had to navigate the worlds of not only baseball and medicine but politics and big business, eventually having to make tough decisions.

by Scott Christopher (Author), Michael S. Malone (Foreword by)
Baseball, Art, and Dreams is the amazing true story of Scott Christopher, a boy who loved the game of baseball. At age six he falls on the broken soda bottle, severing all seven tendons, median nerve, and both arteries in his throwing hand.
Some said Scott had ten minutes to live, and shockingly his team of doctors considered amputation. After years of grueling rehabilitation, weighing less than one hundred pounds as a junior, he did make the high school varsity baseball team.
With no surprise, Scott had the worst season of any varsity player in the country, batting zero with three strikeouts in four plate appearances. His supernatural forces surfaced by his creative thinking that became laser focused on his dream.
Scott built a batting cage in his backyard, hitting day and night, staining his bat handles blood red. His proactive efforts earned him the MVP trophy his senior year.
With an ongoing dream of playing for the Maryland, even as Scott was turned away three times over the next three seasons, was all part of his journey to success. His career shifted gears when Maryland's head coach, Jack Jackson, offered Scott a full scholarship after witnessing him blast a 380-foot home run in a championship game.
Scott's super human ability to focus his energy on his vision takes his life into uncharted territory. When one season was very compromised due to a car accident, he would recover earning MVP honors both his junior and senior seasons. Selected on the All-ACC team as a shortstop, but bypassed in the 1976 MLB June draft, opportunity revealed itself in a new way, offering the chance to play baseball in Korea.
It was January 1977 when he signed a professional contract with the Baltimore Orioles. Over the next four seasons his teams made the playoffs every year. He still holds the all-time organizational record for stolen base percentage in a season.
In 1978, Scott become a professional champion, and the only player in the Orioles system to ever hit a ninth inning home run in the final playoff game for the title.
Learn how his AMAZING story beats the almost one in a million odds as passion and purpose drive Scott's success. His American Baseball Memoir is an INSPIRATIONAL story for everyone. Readers should get ready to "Dream Big, Dream On!"

Have you ever wondered why baseball players are said to be In the Hole, Stepping in the Bucket, On the Bump, Flashing Leather or Getting on Their Horse?
Baseballedgy - Baseball Expressions & Terminology Handbook was written to explain to players and spectators the many fun, useful, and unique baseball terms and phrases. Baseball has carried down numerous phrases and terms and the language continues to expand. Examples of baseball idioms are Bullpen, Ducks on the Pond, Frozen Rope, Rolling a Pair, Hot Corner, Merry Go Round and Snow Cone. The book describes these terms and idioms related to the baseball field itself, along with those associated with batting, base running, pitching, and fielding.
Baseballedgy is full of colorful illustrations and is a fun book to read. It can serve as a "go-to" reference for young players who are learning the game and expanding their baseball related vocabulary. Reading the book together will provide children, families, and friends with an enjoyable and educational experience.

The Magic of Baseball Made Clear
Many of us recognize that ineffable quality within baseball. Movies such as Field of Dreams and Damn Yankees speculate into metaphysical elements of the game. But so far, nothing has been written that makes lucid the spiritual aspect of baseball. Baseball: an Astrological Sightline demonstrates the spiritual and transcendental nature of baseball through the methodology of astrology. This book shows how the stars and planets affect the course of every baseball season and every baseball game. Baseball: an Astrological Sightline introduces the astrological birthcharts of the 30 Major League teams playing in the United States. The history and tendencies of these teams become quite lucid when viewed from an astrological perspective. What was the curse placed on the Cubs? How was it lifted? Why do the Yankees excel in post-season play? What was the miracle of the 1969 Mets? These mysteries and many more are answered through the lens of astrology.
by John Theodore (Author), Ira Berkow (Foreword by)
Baseball's Natural is John Theodore's true account of the slick-fielding first baseman who played for the Cubs and the Phillies in the 1940s and became immortalized in baseball lore as the inspiration for Bernard Malamud's The Natural. Eddie Waitkus grew up in Boston and fought in the Pacific theater in World War II. Following the war, Waitkus became one of the most popular players of his era. In 1949, with his career on the rise, his life changed dramatically in a Chicago hotel when a nineteen-year-old shot him in the chest. Waitkus's dramatic recovery the next year inspired his teammates as the Phillies won the National League pennant. Although Waitkus survived the shooting, he could never outlive it.
Through interviews with Waitkus's family, fellow servicemen, former ballplayers, and childhood friends, and aided by fifteen photographs, Theodore chronicles Waitkus's remarkable comeback as well as the difficult years following his Major League career.

by Dirk Lammers (Author), Fay Vincent (Foreword by)
Baseball's No-Hit Wonders, with a foreword written by former Major League Baseball commissioner Fay Vincent, honors such legendary pitchers as Cy Young, Bob Feller, Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax, while introducing readers to other eccentrics and one-shot wonders who have thrown no-hitters. The book fleshes out the colorful characters, compelling narratives and statistical oddities from baseball's 294 no-hit efforts--as well as the many near misses that are also part of the national pastime's storied history.
Painstaking research and personal interviews have allowed the author to pack great detail into a fun, fast-paced take on the game, revealing the stories of the no-hitter thrown by a pitcher on acid, the hitters most adept at breaking up no-hitters and other gems thrown by guys with nicknames of Bumpus, Bobo, Cannonball and Nixey. Even the game's greatest slugger is credited with a partial no-hitter, and all he did was throw a punch! Chapters detailing the best no-hitters of all time are interspersed with "Did You Know?" lists that include no-hitters by team, city and day of the week, no-hitters of the Negro Leagues, catchers who caught the most no-nos and the best pitchers not to throw a no-hitter.Author Biography
Dirk Lammers is an award-winning Associated Press journalist who for years chronicled the New York Mets' 50-year quest for the team's first no-hitter. In 2008, Lammers tapped into his love of baseball to create NoNoHitters.com, a website dedicated to the Mets' seemingly futile quest for its first no-hitter. For the 41/2 years between the site's creation and Johan Santana's first Mets no-no in 2012, NoNoHitters.com blossomed into the Internet's online gathering point for all things related to no-hitters, garnering press coverage in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post and more. He lives in Sioux Falls, SD. Fay Vincent served as the eighth Commissioner of Major League Baseball from 1989 through 1992.by John Bowen (Author)
Baseball is fun.
That's really all there is to this book, which dives into the niche world of baseball frivolities and explores some of rabbit holes around baseball stories and statistics. Read all about how one player's ultra-rare 4-homer night was just the 341st most valuable of his career, deep-dive into the in's and out's of actually hitting .400, explore why one baseball card referred to a Cy Young winner as "setting a record for futility," and learn about the single most clutch-hitting game ever - and how it came in a losing effort! All this and much more - there's something in here for every fan. Bowen touches on old-school and new-school statistics and digs into oddities from the nineteenth century into the 2020's.by Mary Pope Osborne (Author), Natalie Pope Boyce (Author), Carlo Molinari (Illustrator)

"I treasured going to the Winter Meetings. You don't see people for a whole year and then here you are, face to face, and trying to make a deal." -from the Foreword by Roland Hemond, who has been attending Winter Meetings since 1952 This collection of articles about the Winter Meetings contains stories and hidden treasures that may help resolve moments of wonder that have periodically crossed your mind as a baseball fan or as a scholar. So much of baseball history happened at the winter meetings. This book provides you with a historical answer to the business of baseball over many of the early years of the minor leagues, the National League, and the American League, and even features a chapter on the Eastern Colored League Winter Meetings. Important philosophies regarding chosen identity, reactions to societal trends, agreements on how to operate, approval of new members, and player transactions emerged from the discussions and decisions made at the winter meetings. This book represents the first of two volumes to cover the history of Baseball's Winter Meetings. Volume One covers the years 1901 through 1957, and Volume Two (to be published in 2017) covers the years 1958 through 2016. The first volume covers the years of twentieth century baseball from the first year there were two "major leagues"-the American League having begun as a major league in 1901-and running through the final year before expansion to the West Coast. The second volume brings coverage of the Winter Meetings through the 2016 gathering in San Diego. Volume One comprises the collective work of a team of 38 SABR researchers and editors. The overall project was initiated by SABR's Business of Baseball Committee, the brainchild of editor Steve Weingarden. Volume Two will comprise the work of a number of the same authors and editors, but more than two dozen others. All in all, well over 60 SABR members will have contributed to this effort, including Abigail Miskowiec, Aimee Gonzalez, Andy Bokser, Bill Felber, Bill Nowlin, Bob LeMoine, Chris Jones, Christopher Matthews, Dale Voiss, Dennis Pajot, Ely Sussman, Eric Frost, Frederick C. by Steve Weingarden (Editor), Bill Nowlin (Editor), Marshall Adesman (Editor)
The Winter Meetings have been Organized Baseball's annual offseason ritual since the early days of the game. This is SABR's second volume on their history, covering 1958 - 2016, plus a special section on the Negro Leagues winter meetings. The latter years of the 20th century included many monumental changes in the business of baseball. This volume covers multiple rounds of expansion, the advent of free agency, several work stoppages, collusion among the owners, and the elimination of the American and National League presidents' offices and consolidation of the two leagues as a single business entity.
With contributions by 40 members of the Society for American Baseball Research: Abigail Miskowiec, Andy Bokser, Bob Whelan, Chad Hagan, Charles H. Martin, Chip Greene, Chris Jones, Christopher Matthews, Clayton Trutor, Dan Levitt, Darren Munk, David M. Kritzler and Alan P. Henry, Donald G. Frank, Duke Goldman, Gregory H. by Jack Hayes (Author)
In Baseball's Greatest Hits & Misses, Jack L. Hayes, award-winning author of two other books on Major League Baseball, shares interesting and almost unbelievable stories from his experiences as a batboy at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. Jack also makes you privy to some of those nuggets he picked up along the way, and a few other amazing Hits and Misses-unconventional, bizarre, wacky, and legendary happenings that took place on and off a big league baseball field. Baseball's history is rich with interesting characters and the way they played ball. Characters like the seventeen-year-old female who took to the mound in her first professional appearance and struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig; little Eddie Gaedel, standing only three feet, seven inches tall, who stepped up to the plate to bat against the Detroit Tigers; Bobby Thomson, whose greatest moment in baseball history home run was given an embarrassing black eye years later. Some baseball bloopers are insignificant and fun to see. Others can be devastating and leave such players as Fred Snodgrass, Fred Merkle, Mickey Owens, Ralph Branca, and Bill Buckner with a lifetime of heartbreak and ridicule. Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle, both ran the bases under similar circumstances. One emerged a hero; the other was blamed for an unbelievable blunder. Baseball's Greatest Hits & Misses, Volume I, is full of stories-amazing, amusing, almost unbelievable, a few sad. Yet, they all have one thing in common-they're true!
Author Biography

HAYES possesses a highly diversified and rather unique background; as a teenager, he served as a professional batboy for seven Major League Baseball teams, and rubbed elbows with some of the greatest players of all time, including Mickey Mantle, Satchel Paige, Ted Williams, and dozens of other immortal stars. In 1942, Pete Reiser was on the road to baseball superstardom. Then, he crashed into a wall - an unpadded, concrete outfield wall as tried to make a game-saving catch.
And for Pete, nothing was ever the same.
A year earlier, at age 22, he had won a batting title, a rookie of the year award and a pennant with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Sportswriters could not stop marveling at his skill set, highlighted by a keen batting eye, a rifle throwing arm and speed that whisked him from home to first in three-point-six seconds. Baseball men compared him to some of the game's all-time greats, including Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio.
The crash shunted Pete onto a rockier path, one marked by headaches, mismanagement, hard luck and sadly, more collisions with outfield walls. He'd enjoy scattered triumphs on this road too, and win a place in baseball history as the man who spurred teams to install warning tracks and pad the walls.
But to this day, students of the game invoke his name when somebody asks, which player is baseball's greatest what-if?
Dan Joseph believes Reiser is that player, and lays out his case in this groundbreaking new biography. The author examines old tales about Pete, ones where he allegedly fought off dizziness to slash game-winning hits. But Joseph digs deeper into Pete's life and career to learn what made this extraordinary player risk his health, and his skull, for the sake of victory.

Following an epic failure of the International League's Triple-A Marlins (1956-60), baseball made its triumphant return in 1962, spearheaded by Bill Durney, attorney Ron Fine, and businessman Bill Meranda. Albeit at the lowest rung of the minor leagues, the second-generation Marlins joined the Class D Florida State League making an immediate splash and drawing fans back to Miami Stadium.
In 1963, the FSL acquired A level where Miami would remain until 1991, overseen by major league clubs counting the Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, and independent ownership.
Over 30 seasons, hardball experienced a roller coaster ride of ups and downs, not to mention a brief foray of Triple-A baseball in 1979 with the short-lived Miami Amigos of the Inter-American League. Baseball reached its zenith from 1969-72 when the Marlins/Orioles captured four consecutive league championships under the leadership of the iconic Woody Smith. Several years of hardship and poor fan support due to the deteriorating conditions of the stadium and surrounding neighborhood. Despite the trials and tribulations, several players donning the Miami uniform graduated to the big leagues including all-time greats; Ferguson Jenkins, Cal Ripken Jr., Don Baylor, Eddie Murray, and Dennis Martinez.
A vibrant ownership group purchased the team in 1989 renaming the club the Miracle eventually relocating the team to Pompano Beach. Through the aggressive campaigning of businessman Wayne Huizenga major league baseball arrived in south Florida in 1993, thus ending the storied history of minor league baseball in the area.

The Infinite Inning podcast asks, "How do you progress through life when you can't get the third out?" Baseball's Brief Lives: Player Stories Inspired by the Infinite Inning explores that question by examining the lives and careers of 100 greats of the game in a series of biographical essays featuring stats, analysis, eyewitness reactions, and an awareness of the interconnectedness of baseball and the greater world that has always been a hallmark of Steven Goldman's writing. From celebrated athletes such as Henry Aaron, Pedro Martinez, and Pee Wee Reese to forgotten but no-less-memorable players like Bad Bill Dahlen, spinach-obsessed second baseman Ski Melillo, and worst-ever Yankees shortstop Pee-Wee Wanninger, Baseball's Brief Lives finds the sweet spot linking baseball and life itself in their equally marvelous complexities.

Night games transformed the business of professional baseball, as the smaller, demographically narrower audiences able to attend daytime games gave way to larger, more diversified crowds of nighttime spectators. Many ball club owners were initially conflicted about artificial lighting and later actually resisted expanding the number of night games during the sport's struggle to balance ballpark attendance and television viewership in the 1950s.
This first-ever comprehensive history of night baseball examines the factors, obstacles and trends that shaped this dramatic change in both the minor and major leagues between 1930 and 1990.

Late in 1937 Hugh Alexander, a kid fresh out of small-town Oklahoma, had just finished his second year playing outfield for the Cleveland Indians when an oil rig accident ripped off his left hand. Within three months he was back with the Indians, but this time as a scout--the youngest ever in Major League history. In the next six decades he signed more players who made it to the Majors than any other scout.
His story, Baseball's Last Great Scout, reads like a backroom, bleacher-seat history of twentieth-century baseball--and a primer on what it takes to find a winner. It gives a gritty picture of learning the business on the road, from American Legion field to try-out camp to beer joint, and making the fine distinctions between "performance" and "tools of the trade" when checking out prospects. Over the years Alexander worked for the Indians, the White Sox, the LA Dodgers, the Phillies, and the Cubs--and signed the likes of Allie Reynolds, Don Sutton, and Marty Bystrom. This book, based on extensive interviews and Alexander's journals, is filled with memorable characters, pithy lessons, snapshots of American life, and a big picture of America's pastime from one of its great off-the-field players.

Baseball Under the Palms: A History of Miami Minor League Baseball - The Early Years (1892-1960), tells the fascinating story of the growth of hardball from its humble beginnings, to organized play, and team participation in "outlaw leagues." This led to the eventual acceptance of a minor league baseball team in Miami by the National Association. This sometimes included affiliations with major leagues teams. Along the way, some of baseball's most legendary names including the likes of Chico Fernandez, Pepper Martin, Satchel Paige, and Woody Smith passed through Miami, either on their way to illustrious minor or major league careers or finishing out their celebrated moments in the sun.
This work is the first of its kind that brings to light the full spectrum of the history of minor league baseball in Miami. The inspiration for us writing Baseball Under the Palms, emanated from, The Forgotten Marlins: A Tribute to the 1956-1960 Original Miami Marlins. For lovers of our national pastime, we bring to light the richly varied and illustrious history of teams and leagues; once at the forefront of local baseball.

In the Book of Genesis, when Cain is confronted by God regarding the death of his brother, he replies, Am I my brothers keeper?
Within these pages, players respond affirmatively to this centurys age old question. They took stands against prejudice during times in our country when it was not the norm. Their courage serves as a model for all of us today. These players lived the biblical challenge of loving your neighbor.
This is the third book by the author of inspirational stories about players from our national pastime. Fifteen members of our National Baseball Hall of Fame are here as well as others of lesser fame. The examples include 19th century baseball, Babe Ruth and Pete Rose. Each player was special. Each story inspirational.

Since Cuba's Esteban Bellan made his debut for the Troy Haymakers of the National Association in 1871, Latin Americans have played a large role in the major leagues. Nearly 15 percent of big league rosters are made up of Latinos, while the region's colorful and competitive winter leagues have been a proving ground for up-and-coming major league players and managers.
Early Latin American stars were barred purely because of the color of their skin from playing in the major leagues. Players such as Jose Mendez and Martin Dihigo (the only player elected to the U.S., Cuban and Mexican halls of fame) made their marks on the Negro Leagues, turning the leagues' barnstorming tours into major attractions in many Caribbean countries. This history of the players and events that make up the rich tradition of Latin American baseball gives a unique insight to this long-neglected area of baseball.

From Nick Altrock to Casey Stengel, Dizzy Dean to Satchel Paige, Bill Veeck to Bob Uecker, baseball has always admired the clever. The author recounts tales both famous and little known that capture the character of unusual and offbeat players, unique and engaging personalities and the succession of eccentrics who were officially dubbed "Clown Prince of Baseball."

During the more than one hundred years that baseball has been our national pastime, all types of individuals have been managers of teams. They have run the gamut from political appointees to tyrants, schemers, incompetents and geniuses. Legendary baseball stars have been managers such as Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Walter Johnson, Mel Ott, George Sisler, and Honus Wagner. And Mediocre players, including Branch Rickey, Earl Weaver, Walter Alston have become managers.
Antics galore have accentuated managerial behavior: the pratfalls of Charley Grimm in the third-base coaching box; the umbrella-carrying Frankie Frisch arguing with the umpires that a game should be called; the cap twisting, body-gyrating movements of Earl Weaver, puffing cigarettes in the dugout and attempting to use body language to will his players to perform better. Idiosyncrasies and special styles have characterized managers through the years. An entire collection of one-liners has developed over the years to characterize the managing profession. For trivia buffs, there's an entire world of statistical records about managers. This books attempts to capture the style and substance of some of the greatest managers of all time. An effort has been made to give representation to the different eras of baseball, the various managing styles, and all the nuances and nostalgia that shape this fascinating subject.Author Biography

If there was a first face of baseball, it was arguably Christopher "Christy" Mathewson. At the opening of the twentieth century, baseball was considered an undignified game played by ruffians for gamblers' benefit. Mathewson changed all that. When he signed with the Giants in 1900, his contract stated he wouldn't pitch on Sundays, and he was known for his honesty, integrity, and good looks.
In his first fourteen seasons, as a pitcher for the Giants, Mathewson never won fewer than twenty games in a season, and he almost single-handedly won the 1905 World Series. In 1918, though age thirty-eight and exempt from military service, he enlisted for World War I, where he exposed himself to nearly lethal amounts of mustard gas as he taught soldiers how to put on gas masks. When he returned home, he was diagnosed with lung problems and tuberculosis, which led to his untimely death at the age of forty-five. After Mathewson's death, his eulogies were many, but it was impossible to catch the essence of his life in a single newspaper column. Jane Mathewson, his widow, was determined to provide the reading public with a more intimate portrait of her husband and approached prominent sportswriter Bozeman Bulger, who had known Mathewson for twenty years. Bulger wrote a series of articles titled "The Life Story of Christy Mathewson." His portraits about the player were amplified by original accounts from Jane, and several unpublished chapters from Mathewson himself, which had been discovered among his papers. These combined accounts allow readers to hear from Mathewson and those who knew him best. A superstar long before that term was coined, Mathewson became an icon of sportsmanship. He was posthumously elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame at its first induction ceremony in 1936. In Baseball's First Superstar Alan D. Gaff brings Mathewson to life through Mathewson's own writings and those of others, largely lost to history until now.Author Biography

In 1914 the Boston Braves experienced the greatest come-from-behind season in baseball history. A perennially woeful team, the Braves rose from the ashes of last place--fifteen games behind on July 4th--to battle in the World Series against the Philadelphia Athletics, one of the most dominant teams of all time.Baseball fans witnessed one of sport's most spectacular comebacks, and Boston's National League team earned a new designation: "The Miracle Braves."
Baseball's Greatest Comeback: The Miracle Braves of 1914 follows the Boston Braves through this rollercoaster year, from their miserable start to their inspiring finish. A collection of likeable, determined, and highly unconventional ballplayers, the Braves endeared themselves to fans who rooted enthusiastically for the team. Sitting in last place midway through the season, the youthful group of castoffs and misfits, many of whom had been rejected by other major league teams, followed the lead of Walter "Rabbit" Maranville, Johnny "The Crab" Evers, and George "Big Daddy" Stallingsto turn things around. The Braves battled their way up the standings, finishing the second half of the season with a miraculous 52 and 14 record. They went on to defeat John McGraw's powerful New York Giants for the pennant and found themselves face-to-face with the talented Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series. On the 100th anniversary of this memorable season, the 1914 Boston Braves are still remembered as one of the greatest comeback teams in baseball history. Full of timeless images and memorable characters--including a fanatically superstitious manager, a cheerfully madcap star, and an obsessively driven, yet highly sensitive captain--this book will inform and entertain baseball fans and sports historians alike.Author Biography

A televised baseball game from Puerto Rico, Japan, or even Cuba might look a lot like the North American game. Beneath the outward similarities, however--the uniforms and equipment and basic rules--there is usually a very different history and culture influencing the nuances of the sport. These differences are what interest the authors of Baseball without Borders, a book about America's national pastime going global and undergoing instructive, entertaining, and sometimes curious changes in the process. The contributors, leading authorities on baseball in the fourteen nations under consideration, look at how the game was imported--how it took hold and developed, how it is organized, played, and followed--and what these local and regional trends and features say about the sport's place in particular cultures.
Organized by region--Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific--and written by journalists, historians, anthropologists, and English professors, these original essays reflect diverse perspectives and range across a refreshingly wide array of subjects: from high school baseball in Japan and Little League in Taiwan to fan behavior in Cuba and the politics of baseball in China and Korea.

Elegant yet gutsy, she cultivated a powerhouse team. Yet just as her Eagles reached their pinnacle, so did calls to integrate baseball, a move that would all but extinguish the Negro Leagues. by Larry Lester (Author)
In 1924, after the Hilldale Giants captured the league crown in the new Eastern Colored League and the Kansas City Monarchs won out in the four-year-old Negro National League, the two teams met in a best-of-nine series for the world championship. But a 13-inning tie in Game 4 and alternating wins throughout would force a tenth and deciding game, making it the longest World Series--black or white--in the modern era.
This heavily illustrated volume provides a comprehensive account of the first championship series played between teams from two all-black professional leagues. It provides commentary, records, and full statistics for each club's regular season performance, along with biographical profiles of the players. Coverage also includes position-by-position comparisons of the Series combatants; a breakdown of the attendance, gate receipts, and team shares; game-by-game summaries; comments from the players; and complete statistics--including pitcher-batter matchups--for both teams.

Scouting has been called pro baseball's personalized way of renewing itself from year to year and a pathway to the game's past. It takes a very special person to be a baseball scout: normal family life is out of the question because travel is a constant companion. Yet for those with the genuine calling for it, there could be no other life. Hearing the special thwack off the bat that indicates a raw prospect may be the real deal is the dream that keeps true scouts going. Scouts have the difficult task of not only discovering and signing new players but envisioning the trajectory of raw talent into the future. But the place of the traditional scout has become increasingly dire. In 2016 Major League Baseball eliminated the MLB Scouting Bureau that had been created in the 1970s to augment the regular scouting staffs of individual teams. On the eve of the 2017 playoffs that saw the Houston Astros crowned as World Series champions, the team dismissed ten professional scouts and by 2019 halved the number of all their scouts to less than twenty. More and more teams are replacing their experienced talent hunters with people versed in digital video and analytics but who have limited field knowledge of the game, driven by the Moneyball-inspired trend to favor analytics, data, and algorithms over instinct and observation. In Baseball's Endangered Species Lee Lowenfish explores in-depth how scouting has been affected by the surging use of metrics along with other changes in modern baseball business history: expansion of the Major Leagues in 1961 and 1962, the introduction of the amateur free agent draft in 1965, and the coming of Major League free agency after the 1976 season. With an approach that is part historical, biographical, and oral history, Baseball's Endangered Species is a comprehensive look at the scouting profession and the tradition of hands-on evaluation. At a time when baseball is drenched with statistics, many of them redundant or of questionable value, Lowenfish explores through the eyes and ears of scouts the vital question of "makeup" how a player copes with failure, baseball's essential, painful truth.Author Biography

Once an approved return is received and inspected, the refund is issued to the original payment method within 5 business days. Damaged, defective, or incorrect items are handled at no return-shipping cost to the customer.
Return eligibility is subject to the full policy. Opened, read, or unsealed books with broken seals or visible wear are final sale. Digital downloads, gift cards, and personalized products are non-refundable. Original shipping charges are not refunded for standard returns. Contact us within 7 days of delivery about damaged, defective, or incorrect items.
