"1. Stop Playing Scared. 2. Buy A Game. "What you read above is the best life advice I've ever been given. It was told to me by a fellow classmate in the 8th grade. And I've been using it ever since. I started playing basketball at age 14, after failed tries at football (equipment too costly) and baseball (couldn't hit a fastball or field a ground ball). I was a complete bum. Everyone in Mt. Airy was better than me - male AND female. I didn't make my high school varsity team until my senior year. I scored 2 points per game. How, then, did I get recruited to play at Penn State Altoona 2 summers later? How did I develop the game to sign my first professional basketball contract only 9 years after I started playing? This book is the story of how. I have had the idea of writing a book for a while now, and the beauty of the Internet is that anyone can put their work out there -- websites, workout videos, books -- freely without having to navigate through the traditional gatekeepers of self-expression. The Internet also allows one to experiment and do trial runs of their work, like this book: I made it free to all because the most important part of putting this out is your response; I know I can get a lot better at this writing thing and your critiques will be my first step in doing so.What you are about to read is my story as a basketball player -- only as it pertains to basketball -- from the time I began playing the game up to and through my college years. It is to be hoped that you find it interesting, insightful, descriptive, and entertaining. If so you should tell me. If you don't, I want to know about that too, and why. Speak your mind.Enjoy. #WOYG

by Jim Boeheim (Author), Jack McCallum (Author)
New York Times Bestseller
In this candid autobiography, Syracuse head coach and long time college basketball fixture Jim Boeheim reflects on his life, his teachers, and the game he loves.
Jim Boeheim walked onto the Syracuse campus as a freshman in 1963 . . . and never walked off. A man who has been written off at various stages of his career and criticized for being disagreeable, Boeheim has experienced it all--triumph, despair, redemption; controversy, heartbreak, and scandal; championships, epic disappointments, colorful personalities, NCAA investigations.
His combative personality helped ignite what was arguably the most competitive college basketball conference ever: the Big East of the 1980s, when he and Syracuse battled with Big John Thompson of Georgetown, roly-poly Rollie Massimino of Villanova, feisty Jim Calhoun of Connecticut, and beloved Looie Carnesecca of St. John's, turning the Big East into a Coaches Conference and the Best Show in College Basketball. Boeheim talks about those days and the coming battles with powerhouses North Carolina and Duke, now that Syracuse has joined the Atlantic Coast Conference.
From his association with Syracuse greats Dave Bing (a college teammate), Pearl Washington, and Derrick Coleman, to the Olympics--where he coached players such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Durant--Boeheim has learned many lessons that have helped his team and continue to encourage him now as he nears seventy.
His unprecedented fifty-year career as a player, assistant, head coach and icon has given him unique insight into coaching and the college game, knowledge he now shares.
Front Jacket
In six decades as a player, assistant coach, and the head man on the bench for Syracuse University's basketball program, Jim Boeheim is synonymous with the blood and thunder of East Coast hoops. In Bleeding Orange, Boeheim recounts for the first time all the pleasures and perils of a career spent battling the Beasts of the Big East, the NCAA, and his own fear of failure.
Coach Boeheim has always been full of life, and his combative nature helped ignite what was arguably the most fascinating and competitive college basketball conference ever--the Big East of the 1980s. Boeheim's battles with fellow coaches turned the Big East into the best show in college basketball.
Combining a real-time, inside-the-program account of the 2013-14 season--Syracuse's first in the ACC--with a narrative of his most cherished memories of coming-of-age on the Syracuse campus and of coaching two Olympic gold medal-winning teams, Bleeding Orange is a must-read both for Syracuse fans and anyone who calls himself or herself an aficionado of college basketball history.

CHASIN' THE RING is the story of a man who, in his lifetime, played significant roles at virtually every level of the game he loved, while chasing the championship that was always just out of reach.
Player, head coach, scout, assistant coach, general manager... in a basketball career that spanned seven decades, Al Bianchi did it all... and always did it his way.
After a stellar schoolboy career at Long Island City High School, Al Bianchi went on to earn All-America honors at Bowling Green University. He then enjoyed a ten-year career as a player in the National Basketball Association with the Syracuse Nationals and Philadelphia 76ers. Later, he became a head coach in the NBA with the expansion Seattle SuperSonics and then in the American Basketball Association with the Virginia Squires. He followed that with a long tenure as an assistant coach and scout with the Phoenix Suns. His time as the general manager of the New York Knicks brought his basketball journey full circle, bringing him back to the city where he first played the game as a kid on an outdoor, schoolyard court.

Rick Pitino, Jim Calhoun, and Gary Williams played no small role in the making of modern college basketball. Collectively, they've won more than 2,300 games and six national championships and reached thirteen Final Fours. All three have been enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Pitino, Calhoun, and Williams each spent more than two decades on the national stage, becoming celebrities in their own right as college basketball and March Madness became a multi-billion-dollar industry.
Before Pitino became the face of the Providence, Kentucky, and Louisville programs, before Calhoun turned UConn into a national power, and before Williams brought Maryland to its first national championship, all three of these coaches cut their teeth in front of modest-sized crowds in the crumbling college gymnasiums of Boston during the 1970s and early 1980s. Boston Ball charts how this trio of coaches, seemingly out of nowhere, started a basketball revolution: Pitino at Boston University, Calhoun at Northeastern University, and Williams at Boston College. Toiling in relative obscurity, they ignited a renaissance of the "city game," a style of play built on fast-breaking up-tempo offense, pressure defense, and board crashing. Part of a fraternity of great coaches--including Mike Jarvis, Kevin Mackey, and Tom Davis--they unknowingly invented Boston Ball, a simultaneously old and new path to the top of college basketball. Pitino, Calhoun, and Williams took advantage of the ample coaching opportunities in "America's College Town" to craft their respective blueprints for building a winning program and turn their schools into regional powers, and these early coaching years served as their respective springboards to big-time college basketball. Boston Ball is the story of how three ambitious young coaches learned their trade in the shadow of the dynastic Celtics, as well as the story of how the young players--in their recruitment, relationships, and basketball lives--made these teams into winners.Author Biography

From the time conference play began in 1905, the Big Ten was the Western force in collegiate basketball. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Purdue were the first powers in the league, with a combined 23 titles by 1930. Purdue was dominant in the '30s, with seven titles under Coach Piggy Lambert, including a national title in 1935 led by player of the year John Wooden. The creation of a national tournament in 1939 showed the league's early dominance, as a different Big Ten team went to the Final Four in each of the first three years, with two wins.
Over the next 30 years, the league produced some of the top teams in the country, led by Hall of Fame coaches like Branch McCracken, Walter Meanwell, Dutch Lonborg, Harold Olsen and Fred Taylor. Top players emerged from the conference, like Jerry Lucas, Cazzie Russell, John Havlicek, Terry Dischinger, Walt Bellamy, Johnny Green, Lou Hudson, Archie Clark and a host of others. This book provides the first-ever basketball history of the Big Ten.
Author Biography

"As lively, thorough, and engaging as the team it chronicles" (Nathaniel Friedman), Betaball is a compelling look at how the Golden State Warriors embraced savvy business practices, next generation science, and Silicon Valley's technocentric culture not only to produce one of the greatest basketball teams in history but also to revolutionize the NBA--perfect for fans of Moneyball and The Book of Basketball.Betaball is the definitive, inside account of how the Golden State Warriors, under the ownership of venture capitalist Joe Lacob and Hollywood producer Peter Guber, quickly became one of the greatest success stories in both sports and business. In just five years, they turned a declining franchise with no immediate hope into the NBA's dominant force--and facilitated the rise of All-Star point guard Stephen Curry. By operating in "beta," the Warriors morphed into a model organization for American professional sports, instituting the best workplace principles found inside the world's most successful corporations, and instilling a top-down organizational ethos that allows employees--from the front office to the free-throw line--to thrive. With in-depth access and meticulous reporting on and off the court, acclaimed journalist Eric Malinowski recounts a gripping tale of a team's reinvention, of worlds colliding, of ordinary people being pushed to extraordinary heights, and the Golden State Warriors' chase for a second straight NBA championship during the 2015-'16 season. Betaball is "a book for fans of all sports and science, business and analytics, Silicon Valley and Wall Street, front offices and locker rooms, money and winning" (Don Van Natta Jr., ESPN reporter and New York Times bestselling author).

The first basketball contest was played on December 21, 1891, with each team consisting of nine players. The objective was to send a soccer ball into an opponent-held peach basket. As the popularity of the game increased, modifications were made, such as modifying the receptacles so the ball could be recovered more easily.
Over the subsequent decades, basketball's prominence grew not only in the United States but also internationally. In 1932, basketball was sanctioned for the first time for Olympic competition.
Over the years, basketball's rules have evolved and been refined, with the 1954 addition of a shot clock being the most notable change.
Today, basketball has a tremendous global following and is one of the most popular sports performed in professional leagues worldwide. It has had a profound impact on conventional society, permeating every artistic discipline, from fashion to music to film.

During the late 1990s, eminent basketball journalist Alexander Wolff traveled the globe to determine how a game invented by a Canadian clergyman became an international phenomenon. Big Game, Small World presents Wolff's dispatches from sixteen countries spread across five continents and multiple US states. In them, he asks: What can the game tell us about the world? And what can the world tell us about the game? Whether traveling to Bhutan to challenge its king to a pickup game, exploring the women's game in Brazil, or covering the Afrobasket tournament in Luanda, Angola, during a civil war, Wolff shows how basketball has the power to define an individual, a culture, and even a country.
This updated twentieth anniversary edition features a new preface in which Wolff outlines the contemporary rise of athlete-activists while discussing the increasing dominance within the NBA of marquee international players like Luka Dončic and Giannis Antetokounmpo. A loving celebration of basketball, Big Game, Small World is one of the most insightful books ever written about the game.

For some of us, Big Ten basketball will always mean the original ten great teams that comprised the league. But for all fans, the teams during this time period bring back memories of some of the best teams and players that have ever played basketball.
In the sweeping history of two decades of Big Ten basketball, Murry Nelson chronicles the conference when it was the most successful of any basketball conference in the nation. Coaches such as Lute Olson, Lou Henson, Johnny Orr, Gene Keady, and Bob Knight led the nation in national titles, influencing the league with their playing styles, changes to rules, recruitment and, of course, intensity. Follow Joe Barry Carroll as he leads the Purdue Boilermakers to the Final Four in 1980, Steve Alford as he takes the Hoosiers to a national championship win, Kent Benson's undefeated conference record, and Magic Johnson as he leads the Michigan State Spartans to multiple titles and championships.
With chapters devoted to each season from 1972 to 1992, you can relive the action as if you were attending the games.

by Alexander Wolff (Author)
Author Biography
Alexander Wolff is a journalist, editor, and author. Formerly a Senior Writer at Sports Illustrated, he is the author and coauthor of several books, including The Audacity of Hoop: Basketball and the Age of Obama, Raw Recruits (with Armen Keteyian), and Endpapers: A Family Story of Books, War, Escape, and Home.

Volume II of Basketball's Third Element: Improvisation is in essence a bridge between the theory (Volume I) and the implementation of the theory (Volume III). The theory we have put forth is that there is a third element in each game that goes unnoticed but is highly productive. It requires the use of improvisation which, in turn, is dependent on instincts. This volume builds the basis for Volume III which is essentially a coaching manual for a method of training and playing in the third element. It stays attached, in principle, to the theory of Volume I by developing a case for the technical portion that is the coaching manual. It explains the background of improvisation and instinctive play, the background of the Monk System, and the background of teaching in the system so that third element learning is advanced.

The Dayton Flyers were 2020 outright A-10 Champs, were heading to Brooklyn as the number one seed in the A-10 Championship, and were projected to be a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament. But in less than a week it was all gone-the Flyers' post-season dreams a casualty of the coronavirus pandemic that soon held the entire world in its grip. In Bigger Than Basketball, Larry Hansgen, long-time radio play-by-play voice of the Flyers, tells the story of a group of young men and their coaches who survived adversity, overcame obstacles and tragedies, and ended up having the greatest season in Dayton Flyer history. Larry takes you through an unprecedented moment of history and sheds light on a unique and resilient team. The 2019-2020 Dayton Flyers ended up standing as a beacon of coming together and sacrificing for the greater good, at a time when the Dayton, Ohio community, and the nation at large, was reeling from loss.

To notice greatness and not deny greatness in others you have to notice details that ordinary people often claim do not exist. As ordinary people would much rather blame the victim rather than do their own personal work of self-development. They often deny greatness in others to protect themselves from looking at their own shortcoming often through "hatred and deceptive manipulation (malevolent omnipotence) such was the case with Billy Finn, who were he not surrounded by assholes would have averaged fifty-two points a game instead of merely holding the state record of fifty-two points in one game!
Greatness Kobe Bryant, Elgin Baylor, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Bill Russell, Lebron James are all great and have an element of greatness that I have never seen surpassed in my 77 years. Kobe Bryant and Lebron James came into the National Basketball Association or NBA as it is called right out of high school.
When Billy Finn played there was no such option! Bob Cousy, Famed Guard told him he has nothing to teach him in the seventh grade!
Billy Finn was to basketball what Willie Mays was to baseball - the most exciting ballplayer that ever lived despite elements of greatness in others. For example, Ted Williams was the greatest hitter I ever saw. I saw him take batting practice. He hit consecutive line drives so hard they nearly bounced back to 2nd base. This book lays out the details of what made Billy Finn the greatest basketball player whoever lived!

It is true, they don't make things the way they used to, they don't do things the way they used to, and the times are not what they used to be. This book is a journey back to the days of my early childhood through high school. What was like to be raised in Indiana basketball country? It was an exciting time with over 700 high school teams from every corner of the state of Indiana competing each year in a single elimination tournament for the Indiana State Basketball Championship. One small school triumphed in a miracle over the great odds against them. It is still for me to imagine what those hundreds of Indiana basketball heroes experienced by having family, friends, classmates, cheerleaders, teachers, community fans for all kinds of reasons, even stranger bystanders, cheering and shouting them on with encouragement. by James Naismith (Author), William J. Baker (Introduction by)
James Naismith was teaching physical education at the Young Men's Christian Association Training College in Springfield, Massachusetts, and felt discouraged because calisthenics and gymnastics didn't engage his students. What was needed was an indoor wintertime game that combined recreation and competition. One evening he worked out the fundamentals of a game that would quickly catch on. Two peach half-bushel baskets gave the name to the brand new sport in late 1891. Basketball: Its Origin and Development was written by the inventor himself, who was inspired purely by the joy of play. Naismith, born in northern Ontario in 1861, gave up the ministry to preach clean living through sport. He describes Duck on the Rock, a game from his Canadian childhood, the creative reasoning behind his basket game, the eventual refinement of rules and development of equipment, the spread of amateur and professional teams throughout the world, and the growth of women's basketball (at first banned to male spectators because the players wore bloomers). Naismith lived long enough to see basketball included in the Olympics in 1936. Three years later he died, after nearly forty years as head of the physical education department at the University of Kansas.

The New Revolutionary Way To Build A Successful Business In A Post-Product World
If you are trying to build a successful business in today's economy, read this book. Authored by Bill Bishop, one of the world's leading business coaches to entrepreneurial companies, this book outlines a new, revolutionary way to build a successful business in a post-product world.
"For the past 200 years, we've built companies around specific products and services," Bishop says. "But that product-first model is now obsolete due to accelerating change, increasing competition, and instant communication. Companies that keep using these old models will fail to grow, and may even go out of business all together."
"To be successful in this new environment, you need to use a new post-product business model, one built around relationships, not products. This model, while simple in its structure, is revolutionary because it creates a completely different kind of company; an enterprise that prospers because it takes advantage of accelerating change, increasing competition, and instant communication."
Based on Bill Bishop's work coaching more than 4,000 companies over a 25-year period, this book will open your eyes to incredible possibilities and opportunities, and get you excited again about your business. As Bishop says: Once you understand this new model, you realize that our society has only created 1% of the world's potential value, that another 99% of new wealth is possible for people who are willing to think differently.

Texas Western College, then a small and unknown school tucked away in the far corner of West Texas, came out of nowhere to pull the biggest upset in the history of college basketball in 1966. The Miners' 72-65 victory over the University of Kentucky, coached by the legendary Adolph Rupp, in the finals of the NCAA Tournament topped one of the most remarkable stories in the history not only of basketball, but of all sports. It's a story of triumph of character and heart over hardship and seemingly impossible odds. Their accomplishment also had a big impact on society. For the first time, five African-Americans started in the finals of the NCAA Tournament. The victory overcame many prejudices against the ability of African-American athletes to function in a team concept and opened doors for them throughout the South and other parts of the country.

Every idea on offense we have employed in the five years of running the Shuffle is included in this book. No details have been withheld in giving the wide choice of patterns to use. No claim is made that this is the perfect offense, but it can be used successfully by teams at any level of basketball. In our section of the country, high school "B" and varsity teams are using it, along with several colleges. This is definite proof that any player can learn and master the mechanics of playing at different positions as required in the Shuffle. The Shuffle offense is of particular value to teams of average ability and size which must depend on coordinated team effort to be successful. It also aids each player in developing more skills that will make him a good all-around performer. Separate chapters are devoted to free lance play and the fast break because both fit so well with the Shuffle and add greatly to the scoring potential. The saturation point has not been reached, and the possibilities of this offense are virtually unlimited. Few styles of play give such excellent opportunities for the lay-up basket, as well as middle-distance shots over a compressed defense. It is the author's hope that you will find something of interest and value as we have done in working with the Shuffle Offense
